It was never explained I dont think, all I remember was seeing a pic of the wrench bout 50 pages back saying thats what almost burnt the truck to the ground. Maybe AF or Silver can give us details on what all happened. Im guessing douring the headers the battery was still hooked up and the starter was crossed maybe idk.

My bet is on the wires. Been wondering since the start why there has been no CEL's at all even with the rear O2s gone.

I do believe that AF won the race by default. Silver was unable to participate. So according to my rule book he wins :)

exactly. personally, i almost never disconnect the battery when doing this kind of stuff cause im used to being really careful when working around electrical stuff. its never bitten me either -- im just used to not doing it. anywho...

nick was using a 10mm wrench (as pictured) to tighten one of the drivers side header bolts. i was topside starting to fill the truck with oil when nick glanced over and saw the oil drain plug sitting in the oil (yeah, im an idiot -- at least the new oil would have drained into the pan ;) ) so he let go of the wrench and screwed in the oil drain plug. well, when he let go of the wrench it touched the positive wire on the alternator (a direct line to the battery). surprising thing is, it never really sparked (that i saw). a few seconds later nick sees smoke start coming out from the header. i thought "wtf is that???" not knowing what was on fire, i told him to go get an extinguisher, so he did. i crawled under the truck (almost a minute later) and saw the wrench bridging the grounded headers to the positive wire on the starter. oh yeah... it was literally glowing red. i grabbed another wrench and knocked it down and the rest is history.

Well that puts a new spin on things....now I'm wondering about the PCM? You said your battery was dead after the install right?

Well regardless if the PCM or something else is damaged because of the short, the exhaust still needs to be finished and ruled out.

Better yet why does someone just pull out one or both O2 sensors. If your truck runs (and it will) then this rules out the exhaust.

he did that first...accidentally. he forgot to plug in the o2's and we all said that was the problem, because they were getting too much oxygen.

i fail to see how the engine should run with the o2's out

The ECU would see the loss or O2's go what the **** then run in closed loop at a safe (rich) tune. The engine should run and the CEL will be on.

alright, so planning ahead (cause im pretty sure its gonna get to this point), how does nick troubleshoot the wiring? what if it is a short in the pcm or whatever. how does that get diagnosed?

I now have a feeling this is not going to be a cheap fix anymore. I would just say check all fuses and all body to frame ground straps and cables. This is the new battery correct?

i agree... i have a feeling the cheap fixes have been eliminated. only thing we havent tried is the timing chain. but on top of me being 100% certain its correct, it wouldnt have run for 4 minutes with timing even one tooth off. and its not like the timing chain can jump lol.

talk about an expensive (potentially) accident...

I would start looking for used ECU's on the internet. I think they are what 200 bucks. That would not be too bad if thats all it is.
