Hello all. I recently bought a 2012 Ram 1500 that's lacking most of he electronic bells and whistles. I'd really like to add a touch screen navigation with a back up camera. Does such a thing exist? Also is it bad for the truck to be changing radios with the computers and all that? I've never been one to mess with the electrical work but I really am interested now. Thanks!

I've got a 2012 Tradesman and installed a Kenwood DDX-470 and an AudioVox backup camera. I did both myself and none of it was difficult. I spent the most time soldering the wiring harness for the stereo.

Do you have the part # or model of the audiovox camera? Does it display on the kenwood screen or another monitor?

dnx890hd stereo, harness adapters, camera and walla done !

I had the basic ra1 radio, Now I have garmin nav, sat,hd radio, phone, pandora, ect ect back up cam everything ... pretty easy to do and WELL worth it... Everything to my door for just under a grand.... 1 day to install, rear cam taking the longest.. No wire guessing being the harness was all plug and play.

Next I'm doing the front cam, It will be nice for pulling up tight in the garage and or tight parking ...

same camera I used...

tip .... do not hard wire it right in, jumper wire it in and setup the angle first. the camera comes with a bunch of angle adapters to get the camera view right where you want it. I found out the hard way that the angle was down to the hitch to much for my liking and you have to unwire the entire thing to slide the angle bracket onto the camera.... I used the max angle bracket and once everything was perfect and tight I used some silicone to glue/lock it to the tailgate and the nut... Just didnt want it to turn or come loose on its own.

tip 2

Dont use the reverse wires in the tail light, it wont work .... use the 7pin for the trailer wires, you have a choice here, the orange/white is 12v only when in reverse. so the cam only goes on when you goto reverse. you can wire it to a switched 12v power and the cam will go on when you goto reverse and or you can force the cam on anytime in motion to watch it in motion.

I think the moving lines for the back up camera are only on the OEM camera :-(

Thanks a lot everyone. So if I understand, you have to separately order the radio and the backup camera. There's no product that combines the two? If you install the separate products does the back up cam display to your radio screen or another screen?

Is there any way I could just bring my truck to a Ram dealership and they could instal one of the touch screen radios that come standard in the higher model Rams?

If your radio does not have the display screen you will have to get one that does. With the 2012 truck you can not use the 2013-14 radios, only 2012 and lower to 2009. If you just want the display no nav I would suggest a 2011-12 radio, these are the latest and are called MyGig RBZ model radio. You can find them on Ebay and are not to expensive.

If you want nav, you will end up paying a high premium for the factory radio, I would recommend getting an after market for that.

The camera is a separate purchase and I have seen some after markets that had lines you just have to search. The lines are generated by the camera.

Thanks a ton I'd really like nav and Bluetooth. Figure if I'm going to spend this much, might as well get it all and be done with it. Looks like I'll be going aftermarket. And I'm assuming fitting a double din into a double din isn't really that much work? I looked at some of the DIY threads and it just seemed like some very basic cutting. I'll be honest, I have very little experience with car work at all.

It was fun running the wires under the truck.

What uConnect system did you replace? I am going to assume the head unit was not plug and play. Did you have to purchase any additional harness?

Thanks. I may go this route for camera with moving lines. The OEM back up camera kit for the 5.0 uConnect is going to run me probably $300 plus a factory computer flash. For a little bit more I could get a better head unit with more functions.

Most of the aftermarket rear cameras have distance lines and are also reverse (mirror) image. Front view and Side view cameras are normal orientation image and often don't have lines.

However, MOVING lines that turn with the truck are only in the new 2014 OEM camera (possibly 2013 also, but I'm not sure)
I don't think I've ever seen an aftermarket camera with moving lines.

there is backup lines and there is interactive back up lines. you must use oem camera and have a oem deck ra5 or better to get interactive lines. No aftermarket deck has interactive lines that I know of. kenwood has there dnx series decks with a cmos310 camera that does alot with the lines and camera options but does not bend the lines with steering..

Imo I have a reverse cam and non interactive lines with my kenwood deck. I dont even turn the lines on there worthless to me. I only use the cam to hook the trailer and when parking in the garage or street parking. you can clearly see when your getting close the the rear car or garage ect. The lines to me are more of a distraction.

I'm not too concerned about the back up lines, I'm more concerned about my ability to modify the dash for a double din. Is it easy enough to do by someone with no experience, or should I take it to a pro?
