Posting here to see if anyone has changed their ALTERNATOR BEARINGS?

I have confirmed its the front bearing of the alternator. She (bearing) is basically howling now at this point. This moring I replaced the water pump as that bearing was shot. I guess because the water pump bearing went and released coolant all around in there it seems to have spread the hate to the alternator bearing. Anyways....

If anyone has taken apart an alternator and put only "new bearings" back in the original alternator, please let me know what the part number or bearing dimensions please. Can't seem to find any info except a new alternator, which is a lot more $$. For no reason really.

I dunno this might work, since they changed the name your year from Dodge Ram to Ram, I'm not sure they updated the application guide. Unless they changed the alternator in your year, this would fit.

DODGE RAM 1500 V8 5.7L 345CID 2003-2010

According to Amazon the alternator was the same for 4 gens through 2012, so that item should work, best guess. GL

I like your avatar name, you fit in just fine round here. They have kits for rebuilds, I don't know if you would need that or not to pull apart that bearing. Have you tried to remove the pully? Just spin that center bolt and see if it loosens.

Jason, I don't have an answer to your question but I just wanted to mention that it is refreshing to read that someone actually wanted to repair something instead of just throwing it away and replacing it.

The only thing I can suggest is YouTube for the alternator disassembly/rebuild. I haven't yet looked, but I'd be damn surprised if there wasn't at least 1 (or 100) videos on how to disassemble and rebuild an alternator. And I would watch a bunch, because not all may be the right way to tackle the job.

Once the bearings are out, measure them with a dial or digital caliper to get the sizes and order the proper ones.

P.S. There's tons of chinesium bearings out there. Order Made in USA or Germany or Japan for new bearings. Nice, SKF, Timken, etc., IMHO.

And be careful with the rebuild. It is an electrical part, and a mistake could do damage elsewhere. Good luck, and post your progress and process.

Share your procedure, lots here would be interested I’m sure .

We like pictures to help us understand.

No pressure , but a narrated version would be cool too.

You brought it up .

Thanks in advance for sharing , it will be appreciated .

If you are going to replace the bearings I would buy a rebuild kit so you can replace the brushes too while you have it apart.

Something like this but make sure it is high quality. I have not used this kit it is just for reference.

There "should" be a number on the bearing, at least decent bearings have a number. Take that number to an auto parts or a bearing supply store.

I agree - May as well do it right while you're in there.

I've had an alternator with a bad bearing (Squealing) and it was only about 8 months old when it started acting up, so while I did get another alternator I kept the old one (Ate the core charge) so I could fix it and have one with not much wear on it the next time it happens.
Luckily that's been over 20 years ago and it's still doing OK, with the spare waiting to be used again.

If you're short on cash right now a junkyard is a good place to checkout.

TIP:
Be sure to look for a pickup that's wrecked but the engine is still accessible (Enough), not one just sitting there on blocks or rims.
Normally if it's wrecked but looks good otherwise, it can have some good stuff but if it's just sitting, it's probrably worn out across the board.

As long as it has what you need it should be good enough until you can get one or fix what you've got now, also you can stash it back after you've rebuilt it as well for a spare instead for that reason.

Not answering the question, but a thought.

For less than the cost of the rebuild kit above, I've seen recently installed almost brand new alternators at the pick a part for less money. Might be an option for you as well.

^^^ I wish we had this option here.

All the Auto Wreckers around here have really old vehicles that have mostly been picked clean.

I don't know where all the newer wrecked vehicles end up.

I stopped even looking years ago as I never found a thing that was useful.

SGI Auto Wreckers gets alot of them,as they're probably the biggest wreckers in Canada. And people wonder why Sask Government Insurance is the insurance company most likely to write a vehicle off.
