Hey yall, I got a 2015 tradesman and have doing some upgrades. I upgrade from a RA1 radio to a RA4. Next I've wanted to add audio controls to the steering wheel. I have seen the kits ranging from $150-$200. The kit includes the buttons already installed in the sterring wheel bezel as well as the harness to connect them. So relatively plug and play. However I've also seen the buttons sold independently for about $40 and the harness for about $20-$30. And just use the current steering wheel bezel as it has inserts where they would go. Has anyone done this upgrade with just the buttons and harness? I would prefer to spend $65 -$70 rather than close to $200.

You should only need the harness, rear bezel and buttons. When I bought mine years ago it was sold as a kit.

Will I have to remove the steering wheel to install the buttons?

Yes, you do. Some people opt to replace the steering wheel entirely with a leather wheel (with buttons pre-installed) because of this. Here is a good video detailing the process...

I’m also looking into this but I’m not seeing it for $65?. That’s the quoted “savings”. It’s still $140+ everywhere I look.

Remember when I was buying mine I found two different prices for it. but now I am looking and I see they are all about $140. But that's what I found in the past and I don't know if maybe just it was mispriced but I couldn't figure out what the difference was between my $65 unit and the $140 unit. Sorry for the now bad information. But still worth it, I wouldn't be without it.

After watching that video almost makes it seem like upgrading the entire wheel may be the way to go.
Less work... possibly cheaper too.

I have bought several leather wheels with audio controls for $150 to $200 dollars. You can find them on ebay and Car-Part.com if you're patient.

While anyone was adding the audio controls, did they run into the issue of the steering not really engaging? For example, i spin the wheel twice fairly easily and the wheels barely move.

Nope, mine went back together flawlessly

Not good. Did you switch out the clock spring with a different one by chance? Even if not, I would imagine the clock spring is where the problem lies.

No, I've swapped 6 with no issues and have not herd similar reports.

The connection between the steering shaft and steering wheel has splines a half inch long to keep them moving as one. With the air bag off and the nut removed you can verify the the two parts are mated and turning together. In this pic you can see the steering column with the red marks visible with the steering wheel retention nut removed.

Unless your steering wheel is almost completely off or the splines have been stripped your issue would need to be in the steering column or below. Not sure how that would be damaged, even if you did not use a steering wheel puller.
