So my 18 Laramie CC I got back in Dec 2018 has hit 21k and it’s 2 years old. Within 3 months of having the car I forgot to turn off a dash cam when I went on vacation ( I have one that’s on when the truck is on and another I can leave on when the truck is off) basically it ran the battery dead (9v) I was able to hit it with 50amp charger to jump it and brought it back but this was over a year ago. Fast forward to tonight... I got a cool new gadget (Topdon AB101) that runs diagnostics on your battery, charging and starter essentially. I’ve used it on other batteries and testing my systems. Tonight I decided to test my trucks battery and just see how it’s doing (it hasn’t been giving me any problems) and I’m kinda shocked my the results.

see the attached photos. Basically it’s saying to replace the battery, SOH (state of health) is like 45%. SOC (state of charge) and my CCA should be 730 but it’s showing 520amps. Then my voltage drop during cranking/starting is at 9.56v and the internal resistance is at 6mega ohms.

like I said I haven’t had any problems with it but alittle shocked on what it’s showing. Any of you guys had any factory batteries give up the ghost before 3yrs?

I have one of these tools, but made by ANCEL i believe. I believe their a pretty good way of checking the battery. I'm not sure if the factory batteries in these trucks are the best, but not the worst either. Mine cranks a tad slow at times, probably not far from needing to be replaced.

I'm not terribly surprised. You did run it completely dead, which is really bad news for a Lead Acid battery.

I've had really good luck with NorthStar AGM batteries. They're pretty expensive, but very robust.

Curious if that device works with AGMs. I may need to add it to my toolbox.

Just looked at my package ANCEL BA101 and yes does several types of batteries, i believe it was just under 50 dollars, amazon.

His is probably pretty much the same one as the model number is similar.

The ripple analyzer(when the car is running) tells you the shape of the diodes in the alternator i believe you will have to look into that. (Awesome feature for the money)

I had to replace the OEM battery in my 2014 shortly after just 2 years. New battery has been running strong for over a couple years now. Not uncommon for the OEM to take a dump sooner than expected.

Original battery going on year 6, kinda playing with the limit but she fires right up in 0 degree weather.

These 180 Amp alternators really extended OEM life.

it does every battery type by lithium. AGM, lead acid etc. I would love to go AGM or lithium (1k price) but aren’t tr batteries covered if the truck is a lease?

prob just another name stamped on it. Paid $40 on eBay and got 2, one for me and my dad. Gives a lot of info quickly I like it more for the battery life/estimated CCA and the alternator loading/diode test. I also like that it tests the batteries out of the car so I test my hot rods battery which I pull and bring inside for the winter including my lawn tractors Battery etc. so far it works good. It’s somewhat easy to screw the results tho... it’s why I test multiple times.

If you bought it in Dec 18 then it is actually only a little over 1 year old. Any 12v lead acid battery you allow to drop below 9 volts has been permanently damaged. Generally they will tolerate it once or twice, but also you should have trickle charged it back up for the least amount of damage rather than jam 50 amps into it. I'd say the battery analyzer is correct and it has some damage that gives it a lower storage capacity. It will probably be fine for a while as long as your charging system works and your truck starts quickly, but it will most likely fail quicker than normal if you put it under the stress of long cranking or leaving lights (or dashcam) on for extended times.

The OEM battery in my 2014 lasted for 5 years before it started showing signs of dying. I replaced it then so it wouldn't leave me stranded if I tried pushing it.

Original battery on my 2011 lasted 3 years. Now I replace them every 3 year. Dealer had them back ordered so I went with Advance Auto battery. Cheaper than Mopar and better warranty. Seems like newer vehicles have a lot more electronic demand. My daughters Kia uses a amg battery and the Advance Auto one is 5 years old and still tests good. Have a 10 year old Interstate in my hot rod Nova and will replace it this year, last one lasted same 10 years and was still good.

I'd check it with a legit battery load tester before buying a new battery,as your truck shouldn't start at 9.56 volts, which makes you wonder how accurate your gadget is.

Wait i get it, its the drop hes measuring, 10.5 is tolerable. Thats the voltage WHILE cranking, 9.5 is low but will still crank.

If you measure 9.5 BEFORE you try to crank, it probably will not crank.

My battery in my 2013 only lasted 2-3 years before it died. Can't remember the 2007.

Think he meant, he checked battery it was 9v then he connected 50amp charger, that allowed him to start it.

I think he says it drops to 9.56 while cranking OCD,and if that's the case the truck shouldn't start,or at least not very good, lol.

The OEM batteries in my 2016 diesel lasted 18 months for one, dealer fried it while doing a recall and they both were bad after three years. The dealer only replaced the failed battery battery at 18 months so I am pretty sure that may have contributed to three year failure. I still haven’t heard if it will be covered under warranty but I traded the truck in on a 2019.
