Hi all, I have a 2012 Ram 1500 5.7L and I am doing the dreaded cam and lifter replacement after a cylinder 8 misfire. I've been looking through the threads and have seen many recommendations on oil. I am between RP 5w30 and Redline. I really want @Burla to chime in. I live in California for reference. Any additional recommendations for the project are appreciated.

Did a shop do it? I'd use a break in oil, or random group 3 oil with break in additive and take it out after 500-750 miles see if there is any metal and if so how much. Eventhough 1'2 of the parts are broken in already, when you merry new metal and 1/2 of it is new I would think you still can benefit from seating it correctly. Yeah it's not super impotant with lifters, but I'd do this if it were mine. Maybe supertec or havoline box, some cheap synthetic.

With royal purple oil I dont know how to trust it, the formula has went through so many changes I have no idea what the current moly would be now and even 6 mos from now. Lubegard biotech after the break in, will make royal purple a better choice imo, you will always know good moly with that strategy. You read the oil filter thread?

Redline 5w30 is still hemi honey, it has continued to provide unmatchable protection for the worst group of trucks, the ones that already have hemi tick. I am pretty open minded, I get on board with new strategies as good possibilties when I hear them, still none proven like this formula.

After doing many cam swaps on LS stuff I’ve always used VR1 from valvoline.
