I am new to this forum just recently joined today and a have a few questions. Looking into switching the CAI in my 2016 ram 1500 sport for the k&n 71-1561. Wondering if anybody recommends this or has something else in mind that is a better upgrade? Thanks in advance!

Do a vararam it has proven results as in not just a ad. K&n is junk imo. Most cai are useless and the claims manufacturers make of 15hp increases are on fbo vehicles. The vararam however ppl have put it on and taken it to the track on otherwise stock truck and seen pretty significant improvements. And they look bad ass!

If a CAI is the only thing you will be doing to your truck for awhile just skip it. It is 100% for looks and provides absolutely nothing to your hp/tq. The 71-1561 will just suck in hot air from the engine bay.

stick to your stock airbox. It is actually a true CAI and a lot more functional and plenty fine more people realize.

If you're staying stock for the most part look into the 6.4/Ecodiesel lower intake box with the 6.4/3.0 filter.

If you're going for track times and the most power you can't beat he Vararam Air Grabber. Just be aware that some people, including myself, have had issues with filter fitment into the base which let's dust/dirt by the filter.

i plan on doing alot more to it, i take it off road on the beach to go fishing as well so im looking for upgrades that can help my off roading performance as well. Any other tips on what i should do first instead of the CAI then would be much appreciated!!

I agree with Ohio, MoparBrent, and Hemi. A cold air intake outside of the stock system are more for looks outside of a slight improvement in throttle response. None of them will actually add more than 1-2 horsepower but you would see better 0-60 times due to the throttle response Improvement. I have the Vararam and love it as it opened up my engine bay quite a bit on the passenger side. S&B seems to be the other top choice. But my tuner even said that the stock system works extremely well even if you add 100+ horsepower. Although, he did say there was a limit to it. I just can’t remember the number. If you want to replace your K&N system (which I would) stay away from filters that need oiling if you can. They attract a lot more dirt and clog faster. I know mine gets oiled and I’m not happy about that part but I haven’t found a dry filter for it yet.

A tune if you have the money. Swap the muffler give a nice placebo effect. A pedal commander makes the truck feel a lot better but adds nothing. I have a few videos of how mine sounds didnt do anything for performance but damn it makes me happy lol.

I recently put a K&N CAI and a Pedal Commander on my Ram and it did seem to wake the Hemi up a bit. Getting better air flow through the entire system is what I'm really looking for though. I'll be switching to a Vararam and long tube headers with a tune down the road.

Good luck in your hunt for more HP.

I have the Vararam and JBA long tube headers and a catless y pipe and a dyno tune and a few other upgrades and I’m very happy with my setup.

I got the K&n filter like it so far but have read our stock air box is a good set up & believe there is a additional air scoop you can add to it. Put cat back mbrp & doing pulsar soon but have to agree with other members no noticeable hp gain does sound good to me

You're not going to gain anything from opening up the hood scoops as they sit in the dead air space on top of the hood, and will let rain/snow in.But if you're bound and determined to open them up,the easiest way to do it,is run the backside of the scoops on a belt sander and sand them down to where you can poke the openings out with a pick ,you'll be there all day opening each one up with a dremel, and if you slip,it'll look like ****,lol. This wind tunnel smoke test pic shows why opening up the scoops won't do you much good if you're thinking you'll gain a ram air effect from them

Give this thread a quick read. It's the Volant CAI with lower scoop. A bit pricey but really well worth the money in my opinion. If you go off road just two bolts and the lower scoop comes off.

Plus @Hemi395 did very good research with using his IAT PID on his tuner to actually see what CAI pulls in the coldest air. That really swayed me to getting it.
