Noob here, but I need some advice from experts on this forum. One computer configuration question and I didn't find anything relevant on my searches and I'm hoping you can help.

Dealer did my 12000 miles maintenance, and told me my truck was set on "cop mode". They had no clue what that meant... any ideas on what that configuration does to the truck, and if I was missing something?

Did you suddenly get the notion to pull out some yellow tickets and start citing people for doing 3 km/hr over?

Suddenly felt the strong urge to make revenue for the city?

Honestly, I dunno either. I figure it just removes speed limiter? Possibly dumps fuel in as cops don't have to pay for it anyways?

Manufacturers sell the same engine/computer/vehicle to police departments and highway patrols. Those engines have a performance tune in them. My guess is your computer was set to this performance tune when it is in a civilian vehicle.

If this was the case I would have told him to leave it alone.

Found this with some google-fu:
Having worked on and dealt with Pursuit Packages and GSA vehicles it seems it would be pretty much like some here have bought. Manufacturers used to have the option of the PRST.(exe??) in the ecu you can see w a scanner which only a qualified dealer could activate or service if, say it was for undercover work (ie: GM Tahoes, etc).

Not too sure Ram has that as normal fare since it seems they would want to control the amount of ECU's w that option like their Special Service Package.

That said just start Off With a Tradesman or Express then,

QuadCab
5.7l
6spd
*4wd-As Needed
Anti-Slip (Posi) Differential
Carpet Delete
Vinyl Floor Covering
Center Console Delete

For the amount it would change I'm skeptical I'd want it. If you indeed have something different then expect to also have to perform oil-changes, etc under the "Severe Duty" clause, every 3,000mi or better. Here's the most current publication.

Damnit...links didn't imbed.

Here's some more info.

Sounds like somebody watched some Blues Brothers last weekend.
If this comment was aimed at me I'll state for the record that I've never watched the Blues Brothers: however, I have been a police officer, (1989 - 1993), who actually owned a 1993 "Police Package" Crown Victoria that I bought in Missouri under the state contract because occasionally I used my personal car for official duties. As far as the engine was concerned, Ford published that the 4.6L (IIRC), had a performance tune in the same engine found in the civilian models. It also had things like higher capacity cooling and power generation. They also claimed that they used tighter tolerances for parts, but they made the same claim for their taxi models. Without a spotlight mounted there were other subtle differences between police and civilian models that allowed an observant person to detect an unmarked police car.

I don't know why the possibility of a different factory tune would be unbelievable to anyone. They aren't going to stock a completely different computer for the same engine to accommodate a very small market space.

Did they do any updates as well? Such as a P15 RF hub flash? Reason I ask is I've seen a few times doing the flash update that the RF hub has a stored code for "incorrect police configuration". It's just an erroneous code that sometimes gets set. That may have been why they said that, especially if the tech who did it hasn't seen that code before.

Cop Mode to which you're referring is typically a setting in the PCM and TCM in which transmission shift points are different than the civilian models (quicker acceleration), removal of speed limiters which are typical on GM models, O2 sensor monitor on or off, etc. No, I don't work for Chrysler but did purchase (as City Purchasing Officer) a number of police pursuit or what are known as SSV (Special Service Vehicles) for a large police agency. If you read closely, you'll see some of what can be done: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...9YDQAQ&usg=AFQjCNH0oz64F0m4OWDm8eybf0jHht61HQ

Tach_tech nailed it. These things have that code all the time prior to having the rf hub flashed. I haven't read the tsb in awhile but I believe that code comes up in the list of things corrected by the flash
