Customize Projector Headlights

Thanks. Do you happen to have any pictures of the DRL boards when they were mounted inside the housing? I want to see what they look like and what the mounting area looks like. I’ve been thinking about doing a project but needed to see what the insides look like before I start buying parts. Thanks.

Never mind, I just realized the uppers are the white (yellow) leds and the lowers are the amber (orange) leds.

Ok cool. I want to install some sequential-chasing RGBWA boards in the top and bottom DRL/Turn signal areas and I want to retrofit in the Profile Bi-LED projectors (found them for sale on Alibaba for $129 a pair) and I want to wire them up so both projectors are on for low beams and then both switch to high beam with the highbeams activated.

I just need to see how the projectors are mounted to see if it’s an easy swap or if I’m going to have to fabricate new mounts.

I’m going to order a set of the modifystreet 2019 style lights today. Now that I see the design of the DRL boards I can start searching for similarly shaped boards on some websites, and try to find boards for some other vehicle that are similar in size.

I guess if I can’t find DRL boards similar in size, then I will just fabricate some custom pieces of plastic to match the ModifyStreet boards size and shape, and I can run a couple rows of sequential-chasing rgbwa led strips on the custom plastic boards, as the original ModifyStreet DRL boards are a decent size, which should give the lights triple the leds or more then what the ModifyStreet originally come with.

I see you are running the Profile HiLens for the high beam, what are you going to run for the low beam? And what are you going to do about the HiLens projector being way bigger then the original projector lense that came in the ModifyStreet lights? Are you going to modify the original shroud for the high beam?

I wanted to get the MLED projectors for the low's but decided for now just to stick with the original projectors and bought some katana led's which I'm really happy with. Lights are all back together already.



In this pic they have a brownish tint but they match the color of the truck 99%

In your earlier pictures, you have the Upper White/Lower Amber version of the lights, but in these pics you have white in the upper and lower DRL spots. What led boards did you use or what did you use to modify them? They are way brighter then what I’ve seen for the ModifyStreet lights so far.

I used profile pivot led switchback strips for the upper and lowers

Just used the double sided tape and some apoxy to glue them to the upper part of the reflector housing

***EDIT: Nevermind... I just saw your reply again and noticed you said you used profile pivot switchback strips, I thought you used the Profile Universal Switchback DRL boards. ***

Just trying to see what others have done; what methods they used, what custom parts they had to fabricate or make and what specific parts they have used to see the results they achieved. So I can then apply everything I have researched and learned from others modifying these specific lights and then take that info and apply it to what I want to do with these lights, so that I can be fully prepared and know exactly what I need to do to get the results I want.

I have literally lost count (lol) of how many custom headlights I’ve built for other people for the 4th gen Rams, both Quad style and “OEM” Projector style (and a couple Dual style). So I have more then enough experience building lights to build what I want, it’s just I have never built a set of these ModifyStreet lights so I am trying to learn everything I can, from other members builds, so that I am prepared and if there are any common issues with retrofitting them, or if there is easier ways to do something, I can learn before I start my build. This way I can be as efficient as possible from start to finish and not waste money on parts that won’t fit or work.

More than happy to help out with whatever you need if I can. I was going in pretty much blind on these, Jimmy07 was the only other person so far that had opened a set up and he did his a week or so earlier than me. So I had a little knowledge of what to expect but it's different when it's in your hands and I was doing a couple different things then he did.

I used these and removed the silicon casing

I did the same basic thing that 1500Ram12 and jimmy07 did. I used "generic" parts rather than the more expensive Profile pivot LED strips. I also removed the silicone outer jacket of the strips, exposing just the "tape" with the LEDs.

Using 3M double sided body tape and 3M double sided extreme outdoor mounting tape, I fastened the LED strips inside the DRL reflector "buckets"....took a little finagling but I got them to sit pretty flat (since the LED tape doesnt curve when it is flat against a surface).

I put the original circuit boards back in place but disconnected all of the wiring. I cut the lead going from the board to the marker light, then wired them up like jimmy07 did (buck board to drop the voltage to about 8V, diodes on the leads to the DRLs). The rest of the wiring was the same as jimmy and 1500ram. The result is upper and lower DRLs on when DRL only is called for. Upper and lower DRLs and marker lights on when "parking lights" would be on. Lower DRL will drop out when the turn signal wire gets 12V, once 12V is lost on the turn signal wire, the lower strip stays dark for a couple seconds then turns back onto DRL.

I have not been able to install them yet, but I could get some pics of the setup outside my truck (tip - for anyone tackling jobs like this, a decent 12V power supply for your workbench is a huge help....testing while its outside of the truck is a lot easier than installing them in the truck to find out its not working like you expect)

EDIT: diodes necessary because you are essentially hooking up 2 active 12V sources to the input of the DRLs. When you turn on the headlights, the parking light lead has 12V, and Im guessing the DRL lead (from the truck) also has 12V. My understanding is you need to make sure they dont backfeed each other and the diodes do that.

Let me give you a huge tip from someone who has smoked a ton of these DRL lenses.... Use VHT night shades and spray the INSIDE of the DRL lenses. DO NOT spray the outside, as it will end up drying to a matte black spray paint type finish and look terrible. If you spray the inside of the DRL lense, you get the smoked color/effect plus you get the smooth oem finish of the outside of the lense. It looks like it’s stock/Klearz quality when you tint the inside of the DRL lense.

I use a heat gun and I heat up a 3” section and I insert the Morimoto Pry tool and I break the seal of the glue, once that it’s broken, I move to the next 3” section. I repeat this until I get back around to the first spot I did. Once I’m here, the headlight just pulls apart. You need to make sure that the inner part of the clear lense has separate from the black housing section, or it won’t pull apart. I also have a few other tools I use as well, if the headlight is giving me trouble I wedge a few U shaped clips I have into the seam and then prey it apart.

I’ve painted countless sets of Ram headlights and I always use Duplicolor spray paint, as they offer paint code color match in a spray can for $8 at my local pep boys. So I can get any OEM Ram (Chrysler) color in spray can form. So it’s super easy to paint any headlight parts I need. Always comes out looking perfect as long as you prep properly, primer, paint and clear.

I’m getting close to pulling the trigger on letting Jeremy from RS dress my headlights up for me. I don’t want to F these expensive stock lights up and his prices are reasonable. The biggest issues are:

A) shipping cost to and from Canada

B) needing lights in the meantime
