Did Redline Oil work against your Hemi Tick?

So I bought my 6.4 with 18000 miles and the start up tick. Told it was normal. The previous owner did some oil changes. I was sure to use pup 0w40 per the manual. Not sure when but the pump has failed and is getting warranty replacement. When they are done I will be sure to do a 3000 mile change and an independent oil analysis. In Central NC winter time 30-50* summer 70-100* what weights are you all suggesting?

That's what I do. I'm on 0W-30 right now.

I use penzoil ultra platinum and lube guard. Is a 10 ounce bottle enough protection for the 7 quart Hemi.

I use two 10oz bottles in mine.

Thanks to Corey for leading the way on info on how the mds function lubricates lifters. Sometimes when his truck ticks even on 0w20 redline, he uses mds a couple times and notices the tick goes away on his truck, it is like adding some steroids to that redline treatment, hey whatever works. For me I can say mds didnt kill my tick as it ticked for lots of miles under regular driving that included mds operation, at that time I doubt I even knew what mds was. But turning off mds might make redline inadequate at killing some hemi ticks. Each truck is gonna be different, but if you have any tick on redline try some mds runs and see if it helps. Corey has a mechanical reason for why this works, maybe he'll update us.

I hear ya. I needed both manifolds repaired. Before I knew what the problem really was, I was scared ****less that I had the dreaded tick, and it was loud! Post repair, it's as quiet as a (enter metaphor of choice here)

So for my truck at least, MDS helps keep it quiet. I hate the way it drives with it on but if it works ill deal with it.

I had turned it off via tuning in mid December and noticed it was getting louder at hot idle a few weeks ago. I turned it back on and it's quieter now. I was about to blame the 20wt oil but then I remembered I had turned off MDS so I figured I'd give that a shot before changing oil in the snow. Wish I had thought to take videos...

yeah, I still like it off, but in fact that does mean less lubrication. As long as redline is keeping mine quiet, I prefer mds off. Future generations they may have software that gives you an automatic fine if you disable mds, I wouldnt doubt that at all if someone told me.

MDS isn't as obnoxious on heavy duty trucks with 6.4L Hemi.

The giant trash can muffler with outlet flapper valve along with fixed resonator can renders drone nearly silent. I believe they threw all that effort and money at the heavy duty cause contractor bosses drive em and they aren't into loud dude exhaust noise all day.

So is it random? Because my current 2020 5.7 e torque has 79k miles I got it with 7 miles or so and I’ve only used 5w30 pup and never had tick. And I know what it sounds like, just never had it. My 2017 with 119k mikes always ran pup5w30 as well no tick… I’m in Arizona where it’s hot as balls and I use my truck for my personal business so it’s driven hard and put away wet often. I tow a lot long road trips etc.

It's not random so much as it is a possibility.

A Chrysler Technician on this site estimated 5-10% of all Hemi engines sold by his dealership failed lifters and camshafts.

That's an astounding number in this day and age, but the great majority do not fail. Hence this Forum to share ways to improve our odds of avoiding failure.

UOA's are one tool you can use to perhaps glimpse if your truck might be more prone to have cam problems. I know my hemi tick truck had real bad wear numbers, magnified because it was a young engine, but that young engine doesnt explain the level of wear numbers. Anyone wanting to use tools to see how the engine is doing, get a uoa and take part in blackstone thread for feedback. Now, the weakness of using this tool it doesnt account for the fact you can have a cam fail at anytime, so it isnt perfect.

I would say a lubrication strategy is a good idea regardless of the hemi you own, there is little downside to using high moly and ester base oils. With the work of members on ram forum, you can even employ this strategy with any oil you so chose. Being this is the redline thread, I think we can agree is redline is next level above the lubeguard strategy. You can pick what works for you, and a uoa can help with that choice. If the uoa is decent and no hemi tick or dry tick, you may opt for just using a high moly oil, or maybe adding biotech for a little extra protection. If your wear is high and/or hemi tick, you may opt to nuke it with redline 5w30. Or something in-between, to each their own.
