If it were me, I would use redline on new lifters. The only time I wouldn't use it was if my engine didn't have hemi tick or hemi tick or cam damage history. Once there is a cam issue, I would break out the nuke option. That's just me. Plus high zinc good for new engine parts.
Do you think the Lucasoil zinc additive is good enough to add to the 5w20 RP and 48-10 filters for the breakin? Or should I bite the bullet and send that stuff back and just roll Redline 5w30?

Maple Syrup works wonders. “a little dab’ll do ya’”

Hint: Magical WonderWorker claims of what is actually a common ILSAC motor oil will not fix a mechanical failure.
But it’s a small expenditure to waste.
Just come back and tell the truth about the outcome so we can shut the Snake Oil salesmen up.

If you got it on hand, run it,as you should be changing the first oil change with-in a couple hundred miles anyways, then switch over to 5W-30 and the bigger 20-820 filter.
I think i told you this already, but there is "no" break-in with a roller cam,it's not like the older flat tappet cams that needed a 20 minute break-in at 2500 rpm,as soon as the engine starts,a roller cam is broke in,lol.

Most zinc break in additives I would say are similar, so with out knowing exactly that would be ok. I wouldn't use that filter ever on anything especially a hemi, but that's is just my opinion. I personally have had filter restriction by itself cause hemi tick in my truck, never with the 20-820. That filter is a known issue not only filter restriction but to the point of throwing codes. Up to you on that, many people use it, just wont ever find one on my truck. If you have the zinc additive your gonna seat the new stuff as best you can, I don't see an overwhelming reason not to use RP 5w20 for this. I probably like the cheap synthetics like super tech for this, as RP does have some esters which isn't desirable for break in. Probably not a major deal, good idea with the zinc.

7/8/25 Update:

Got a good bunch of parts for the beast, but waiting on an order from Allmoparparts.com. I had a gasket kit on my order that was backordered, so I had to cancel that part and order parts individually.

It is what it is.

I haven't been able to work on her much, some of my grandkids are here and been running here and there. My grandson will get to help with some of the work, hopefully.

Parts are not cheap for the beast, and I am nervous AF hoping I get her assembled correctly.

Stay tuned......

You took your time and more importantly listened to those who knew and asked a lot of questions beforehand.....you should be all good. Keep us informed.

Will do.

I'm not particularly happy with my experience ordering from Allmoparparts, but it's partly my fault, maybe mostly.

Benny was great getting a quote to me, absolutely no issues there. I screwed up by ordering parts outside of the quote, like as a guest. I only ordered some of the parts on the quote.

I did not catch that 1 part was not in stock, and that hung my order up.

In my defense, had a simple email been sent to me from the start, I could've taken care of it, and I wouldn't be 10 days out with nothing shipped.

I despise playing e-mail tag. I found a phone number for them, but it had a message that "due to the pandemic, everyone is working remote".

The pandemic is long over. One phone call with a live person, and it all could have been straightened out.

I then set up an account online, but I cannot log in. I have to go in through my activate account email, even though I've already activated my account.

Not a good experience, but I'm probably doing something wrong. Wouldn't surprise me. I just want to get my truck fixed. Very frustrating.

And wouldn't you know, Today I get a call from AllMoparParts that the backordered gasket kit is in, do I still want it?

WTF????

I said no, I already reordered the individual parts except for the 3 parts I asked them to quote.

So, I will get 50% off shipping on 3 parts, a crankshaft seal and 2 horribly priced o-rings. Probably no shipping break on the original order that cost almost $100 for shipping and insurance.

Still don't know if the original order will ship or not.

Ed luck at work.

That sounds like a lot to keep up with. Hopefully you have a spreadsheet to help. Why was shipping so much?

I imagine the weight. I could be off a bit, it was at least $60. I got a bunch of stuff from RockAuto and it waa about $70 bc 4 or 5 shipments. All those parts have been delivered, the last box arrived July 5.

Both orders were placed June 29th.

Just checked, it was $69.92 plus $26 for shipping protection from AllMoparParts.com.

I ordered the MDS cam, pushrods, head gaskets, lower gasket kit, and crank sprocket.

The lower gasket kit was the backordered part, I ordered the oil pan gasket, w/p gasket, and timing cover gasket from Rock, and it's on the way, all I wanted to add from AllMoparParts was the crankshaft seal, pickup tube o-ring and dipstick o-ring, which RockAuto did not have the OE parts.

AllMoparParts csr said they could not add those 3 small parts to my order, even though they are able to remove the backordered gasket kit.

I am about 1 inch from calling my credit card and cancelling the charge and ordering those parts somewhere else, even if I have to pay more.

Well, I got a phone number for them, and in 10 minutes I found out they credited me for the backordered part, and the rest of the order ships today. Yay!

The 3 small parts, no dice, separate quote coming with 50% off shipping. Woop-dee-doo!

But, at least I'm a little closer to the end of the tunnel.

So much nicer physically talking to someone instead of playing e-mail tag.

So far I've spent:
$2300 @ RockAuto
$1100 @ AllMoparParts - $211 credit
$115 @ RockAuto
$53 @ AllMoparParts order 3 parts
$45 ebay for a tool
$75 Amazon for tool, silicone, blue loctite, red line assembly lube

Still need:
2 oil changes worth cheap oil/filters
1 oil change premium oil/filter
Couple gallons coolant/distilled water

Jesse's 8 speed trans thermostat bypass and 6 qts mopar 8+9 speed unicorn shizz.
(Ordered Jesse's bypass today)

Had you ever change the tranny fluid in the 200k or so miles you've driven?

You keeping a running tally on how much you're into it for? I'm wondering how close it'll get to the price of a new Mopar long block.

It sits at about $3500 in parts w/o shipping costs, and a couple tools, like the phaser holder you suggested.

I still need oil and filters, coolant and distilled water, and a set of remflex gaskets. And a half-dozen qts. of trans fluid so I can do a drain and fill before installing the PPE pan down the road.

Some of the parts I might not have needed (oil control valve, mds solenoids, pushrods, etc.), but I feel better replacing the internal stuff while I'm in there, esp. with 200k on the clock.

Also, felt better using OE, just don't wanna have to open her up again.

I'm nervous AF about putting her back together.

And I will likely have LOTS of questions, too.

It sound's like you'll be into it for well under the cost of a Mopar long block, since some of the items you've had to buy would still be needed with the long block anyway.

Going OEM is is wise.

I'll probably bookmark your post above, just in case. I'm sure the day will come with that parts list will come in handy.

Don't forget to remove the blue shop towels from the intake ports before buttoning everything up!

With the mileage mine has (200,000+), so far so good.
That's one big reason why I did mine with some Lucas in the oil and that was to get a little more oil pressure/better oiling from what I've got, which did work how I wanted it to.
It still runs strong so I'm hopeful it's OK, it does make a ticking sound at idle (Have to listen for it) but runs fine otherwise - Could be an exhaust leak so I'll just keep an ear on it as time goes by and do what I have to do, if I have to do anything at all.
