Do you guys think radar detectors work?

I think here it starts @$400 and just goes up, the RCMP do not **** around out here with speeders at all, at least where I live that is.

I hear this more times, got a ticket, lost my Dl, lost my job because I lost my DL, soon to follow is my GF/wife left me lol. All over a speeding ticket and they blame everything/everybody else and its there fault and no ones elses.

20 over the limit here and you will get a excessive speeding ticket (not cheap at all) points on your DL, your truck/car might get towed and sold off at an auction, and if bad enough you might spend the night or two in lock up.

How is 20 over the limit considered excessive? Ridiculous. I know in ontario its 50 over then your loose your permit and they tow your car on top of the tickets, and thats alright, but like charonblk said 120 is the normal speed on all the highways (limit 100 here)
I think here in quebec the rule is double the posted speed. If you do 60 in a 30 school zone automatic suspension and towing, 140 in a 70 zone et cetra
I remember a few years ago someone got tagged at like 180 in the ville marie tunnel (70 zone and one of my fav places to let the hemi sing! :p ) and aside from the towing and suspension he got thousands of dollars worth of tickets and something like 32 demerit points. Ouch.

7-8 years ago I love my Valetine 1 and never went on a road trip without it. Nowadays, they are practically worthless with everything giving out a false signal (including almost every 18 wheeler with their EZ Pass system, radar cruise control, etc.)

I recently sold mine after 8 years after my last road trip of 10 hrs each way, they dang thing almost never stopped beeping.

Not ridiculous at all, one needs to drive the roads out here to understand. BC bud zero tolerance for speeding and I back it 100%. 100 kph for some of the hwys out here, but most where I live are 90 and under for a darn good reason. Not too many straights out here and people just can't handle corners nor can most trucks/cars/bikes, if a corner has a posted speed of 80 then 80 you better be doing it or lose it and well peoples lives.

We have whats called the summer stomp a big bike rally, first year and most years its just a big mess for the RCMP and the EMT's more people get killed/hurt because there bike can do that corner at twice the posted speed limit....... NOT.

Hey like it or not speed limits are posted for a reason.

People routinely do 15-20 over here.

The problem is that the speed limits are set far too low.

Also there was a study done recently that indicates raising the speed limit actually helps reduce accidents on a LOT of highways. Most of the 55mph stuff is dangerously slow.

Sure they will say that, just gets you to buy more gas thats all. All I read is my truck get **** mpg, well slow the heck down, and maybe your truck will get better mpg. My truck was never designed to go over 65 mph, and thats when she starts to suck gas.

Back in the day 55mph was the norm down there and why......... to save gas.

speed limits are set low where i live too. Ive been pulled over twice in the past year or so, once for doing 61 in a 55, and once for doing 65 in a 55. Didnt get a ticket either time because the officers liked my truck :roflsquared:But no i just didnt get a ticket because they were aware that there was nobody around and i wasnt a hazard, they just wanted to make sure my plates were up and i didnt have a warrant or anything. just wanted to check me out i guess.

Dude I get close to 19mpg on my 70-80mph commute to work in my R/T... Open road with no traffic at 85mph I get at least 17-18mpg. I call that good gas mileage.

Even more so, the cops here don't care if you speed. I've been doing 15 over past cops and they don't care, because literally EVERYONE is going that fast.

All you northerners and your Kph had me confused for a minute. Ha.

CHP is pretty hard core where I live, but not about posted so much as flow of traffic. I've passed them doing speed traps at 80mph in a 65 zone and they dont even tail me. Because everyone else is going 80.

Once you get into the Nevada desert, they dont give a flying ****.

You might want to check your own facts for BC. I'm from Vancouver Island and my parents operate a driving school there; I also teach as a traffic safety and collision avoidance for oilfield vehicles. The excessive speed is 40km/h over and carries 3 points, $370minimum, no suspension, 7 day impoundment of vehicle + towing and storage. 60km/h over carries 3 points, 485 minimum, show at hearing with possible suspension. The impoundment is what gets most people because 2nd offense within 2 years is 30 days, and 3rd+ is 60 days, regardless of who owns the vehicle.

Excessive Speeding and Careless Driving - Road Safety Rules and Consequences of Unsafe Driving - RoadSafetyBC

Most people that lose their licenses is not because of the speeding but are generally charged with other offenses like stunting, racing, or reckless/dangerous driving.

My Passport Max doesn't go off that often, and it has all the gps crap in it so it learns false signals and mutes them for me, I don't condone speeding by any means, but like dubstep said here in Texas if you are doing 10 over the limit you are a hazard because Grammy is passing you doing 20 over! It mainly got my detector for piece of mind I guess you could say, when i used to drive my race car as my daily. It's a bright color and sometimes in the middle of the night you want to drive a little spirited. Nothing wrong with that. But by no means do I drive spirited with other vehicles on the road or a car full of people, only me and when there is no traffic.

You'll notice that I said I teach traffic safety and collision avoidance, not defensive driving; in many cases it's SAFER to do the same speed as those around you rather than become an impediment and forcing people to merge into other lanes to get around you. I also teach people how to take their vehicles to their limits on auto cross and dirt roads because knowing the real limitations of your vehicle is more important than thinking you know what it can do. I see lots of different driving styles and as I tell all my students, what they do with their knowledge is up to them. Also, if you read all of my posts, at no time have I said you or anyone should speed. I have given information on topics and said what the general speeds on our highways are and what I myself drive. You'll also see me as one of the first to be doing 30km/h BEFORE a school zone or driving with my hazards and light bars on at 30km/h lower than the speed limit when the road conditions dictate the need.

as long as we are all arguing about speed, if i was never going to go over 55mph i wouldnt be driving this truck with a huge motor, id be driving a dakota with a v6 or something... i dont think anyone buys a truck with a 5.9 or HEMI and intends to never go a touch over the limit

I do not disagree with you but driving here in the Ok is not the same as Alberta or out on the island or the lower mainland. We don't really have shoulders to pull over on to let speeders pass, we get the odd passing lane here. Where we are most of the #1 is a two lane highway not a big ass four or six lane hwy. "I think" the #1 hwy between Golden and Salmon arm is classed #2 as the most dangerous part of hwy #1 to travel in BC. As for leds in BC you might wish to read up on the use of those here, gotta love the AB'rs driving out here with them turned on, on a nice clear night.

Driving skills, what works in one place does not mean it works in other places.

In the summer months we park the truck most Friday nights to Mondays to stay off the hwy to avoid the AB'rs and the headache they cause on the hwy.

To each their own speed if you wish but don't go whining when you get a ticket.

I am not bashing AB'rs in particular but it is what I see and have to deal with the most.

My light bar is a little different than the ones you are thinking about, though I do have a few of those on that truck for when I'm winching or responding on back roads. I'm licensed to operate a vehicle with a flashing light bar anywhere in Canada and when that bar is on I don't have a speed limit, provided I operate safely. All of my vehicles, work and personal, have wig wags or a light bars as I am one of those people legally obligated to stop and help.

I've lived in Kelowna and Grand Forks so I know exactly what the roads are like in the area and when comparing them to places I've worked in the world they are a walk in the park but because people here have a different view of what is dangerous I understand where you're coming from.
