So My 2020 1500 Classic power steering went out last week. Tried all the reset steps and it would work for 30-45 minutes then fail again. Truck is at 132k on the clock.
Looking around cheapest I found new was 1900 remans seem to be out of stock everywhere.
Found one at the local junk yard off of a truck with 68 k for 1200
With 2 year warranty. So decided to go that route.

Swap out was kind of a pain but learned a few things.
I used a floor jack and jacked it up just under the rack unit. Getting it out was a pain
Could not get it to clear .
Finally after 2 hours of push and shove I finally got it to clear. dropped the jack down and slid it out.
Here's where I learned a trick, by total accident.
The new used unit was turned all the way to the right so the drivers side rack was shorter than the right side.
It went straight in no issues. jacked it up line up Bolts and bam install to 30 minutes

A good choice.

A used OEM junkyard unit is still a lot better than the new aftermarket units.

As for removal, pop the rod ends, disconnect steering shaft, remove driver side tire and the whole thing should slide out from the driver side. Hardest part is disconnecting the steering shaft and electrical connectors from my experience.

@matchek

Just curious, if any of you are still around. How did those aftermarket EPS racks work out?

@matchek was on his 2nd one, if I remember right.
65k and 3 years on my rebuilt cardone..
OEM failed after I hit a pothole at 40k miles, and not even a massive pothole. Not enough to even damage any other steering components.
The cardone was less than $800 after core return.
Maybe it's been 5 years.

Ill definitely keep that in mind. It's nice to have an alternative to the $2k oem units.

Most of the ones that have been bad out of the box were Dorman. Maybe all of them.
