The +/- buttons on my column shifter don't seem to do anything. I understand this is supposed to be the ERS control. Is there a way to check ERS functionality in AlfaOBD? Are these switches known to fail much?

Just to verify, when you hit the buttons you don't see the gear selection number pop up on the dash display and toggle up and down when you hit the switches. The transmission won't necessarily shift when you hit the buttons. Just depends on the current condition. But the number display should change.

There is no method of testing the functionality using AlfaOBD, but you are able to verify that the BCM is configured to see the option.

BTW, please help us to assist you by adding your truck details to your avatar. TIA

And, welcome to Ram Forum.

If you press and hold - it should go to 1st gear.

I use the 'press & hold' of the '+' button to disable the ERS function. I'm not familiar with setting the ERS to 1st gear by holding a button or buttons. I will test this during my next outing.

On my '21 Warlock, tapping the (-) button while in Drive sets the ERS to 1st gear.

I tried holding the (-) button while traveling down the road at about 35 mph. Don't try that. It dropped into second gear.

Tapping the (-) button will enable the ERS and set the current gear as the maximum gear.

Holding the (+) button while moving with the current gear displayed will disable the ERS.

On my '16, if I hit the "-" button while in gear and moving along, it will set the ERS to whatever gear the xmission is currently in and I hit the "+" until it hits 8th gear on the display and leave it there. PS: It doesn't like to go into ERS if in 1st gear. Engine stumbles until I advance to 2nd gear or above on the display indication. It will then go into 1st gear without complaining and smooth as silk...

Never tried just holding the buttons in, as I perceived something bad can happen while moving along. Figured I would read somewhere where someone did it and I could learn from the mistake, if there was one.

Was going to the say the same basic thing. I have a '16 2500. If I press the button while driving it will "turn on" to whatever gear the truck is currently in. My trans is the 6 speed. So if cruising down the highway with the trans in 6th gear it will come on and show gear '"6". If you hit the "-" button it show 5, and if you keep hitting "-" it will progress down to 4, 3, 2, 1. It will NOT always immediately downshift when you hit the button as you have to meet certain conditions. For example if you are running 70 mph and hit it down to 1 it will not downshift to 1 because you would probably lock up the tires or over rev the engine. Good chance it will drop to 5 and maybe 4th gears, but probably won't go any lower until you start slowing down. If you come to a stop with it in "1" the trans will not upshift out of 1. If you immediately upshift it into 4th gear, it also won't immediately go into 4th gear. It will upshift as normal to 2, 3, and then 4 but not go any higher.

Guess my ERS button is not working. I get nothing from pressing either + or - when driving. Unless this was a feature not included in the 2017 Tradesman and the button is not connected...

Did you check with AlfaOBD to see if it shows as available?

I was unable to find that menu. Maybe because I'm using an android version?

Sorry, I don't have much experience with the Android version, I ditched it ages ago.

Ask Google how to search options with the Android version or maybe another member can point you in the right direction.

I also found an option to change the ERS config, but was wary of changing the setting:

I'm guessing if it's a 17 Tradesman in Canada,it'll be the 6 speed with the gear shift on the column. You'll usually get more help if you tell everybody what we're trying to help you with,as you were asked to do.
Do not assume we'll know

Edit:Oops i did see you'd posted you have the column shifter sorry about that.

Big time ^^^ DITTO ^^^.

Lots of really knowledgeable folks here, but they need to know exactly what you are driving:

I see in yer sig area: 2017 RAM 1500 4x4 Tradesman 5.7

Now we need: what level of trim, (Basic/advanced dash), 6 or 8 speed, gear/rotary dial shifter, stuff like that. Also a Pic of your steering wheel area showing ERS gears nice too, more info more help, especially from the real smart folks here, who are always willing to help. (You might want to find which fuse for the ERS, might just be a fuse).

YEAH I missed that too, isn't the ERS on the column than? Been a long time since I had a Column shifter in a RAM: I am sure thinking fuse out, vs not hooked up. But Internet Guessnosis at it's best.

ADDED: I cannot help ref any AlphaOBD stuff, do not have and do not use. Just got a very mildly optioned 19 (5th Gen) Biggyhorn. But I do have ERS.

FROM AN OLDER POST:

Ok, I got the ERS (Electronic Range Select) working.

J18 fuse was ok, but I wiggled it anyway, it didn't have any effect. Driving it, I tried holding either button down for an extended period of time (up to 1 min or so each) with no effect either. Then I went into the tried and trued 'go crazy' mode where I toggled back and fourth on the plus/minus buttons 50 - 60 times or so and eventually it started working like it should. After that it seemed to go into and out of the ERS mode like normal.

I suspect the contacts inside the stalk may have been dirty. Number one, I don't use it a lot, number two, it was pretty dirty inside from the former owner; Number three, they pea-graveled the road by our house this summer and it decided not to rain for like 1 1/2 months so everything got really dusty. Perhaps the contacts got really dirty, or became wet when I did a big clean job a couple months ago. Fingers crossed. As of right now it works.

It's on the stalk (base), I should have mentioned that.

I just noticed in the manual it looks like there's a 20A fuse (J18) for 'Transmission Range'. I'll give that a look tomorrow.
