Just got my ram a month ago...love it...13 4 full sizes doors 5.7 bed 5.7 hemi..3.55 gears...not looking to try to hot rod it but trying to get a bit more power I tow about 2500 pounds 6x12 enclosed trailer...75% of the time I'm in it ..maybe a little mpg of possible...

I have a few questions any input from experience helpful

I just ordered an intake..

I've been reading about the Y pipe air restrictions so I'm thinking about replacing that..but then
I thought I do the Y pipe and put on an after market exaust. ....thennn...haha I thought if I'm doing that should I just get a 2 input 2 output aftermarket muffler and do away with the Y ? Or are 2 single mufflers better....so many options.

Also do the resagnators in the rear restrict? Would doing away with those do me any good? Or harm as far as hp or mpg

I don't want the truck to be loud...maybe a little louder but I don't want to go crazy. ..I want a little more power and maybe mpg. ..although I'm not expecting night and day...

I read so many different opinions so I'm just kinda looking for some first had...

Will the exaust changes get me more power and mpg with or without towing(if I keep my foot off the gas)

Will I loose mpg if I do the exaust. ..and will my truck still last if I start changing stuff like this

I looked at headers...but alot of money and I don't really want to tear into the truck that far..

Maybe a tuner in the future

Any real world experience input with the exaust and pointers to good parts would be appreciated

Got the same truck but with 3.92 gears. S &b intake, diablo tuner w/hemifever and magnaflow muffler. Biggest change I've had was with tuner. Muffler is one in two out. Resonaters out. I do 55 to work for about 25 min getting 23-26 mpg.

Please understand that recommendations are like a**holes, everyone has one---That said---I'd put a 18" or 22" Magnaflow muffler on and leave the rest of the exhaust system alone. I'd install 4.10 gears, your CAI and a tuner, with a custom tune by Hemifever. I think that that will address all your wants and needs as you have talked about and it will not do any harm to your truck. You will see some increased power for towing, you will increase the sound of the truck(within reason), you may inprove your mileage(if you keep your foot out of it----fat chance)and you will be a lot happier with the overall performance of your truck.

My exhaust guy told me to do just the Muffler.
Not Muffler and Y-pipe.

Had another member state that could be acct of lack of headers. If i had done headers too, then the Y-pipe may have made sense. I do not know.

I cannot tell any difference in HP form Muffler but everyone claims 5-8hp gain.

I'd have to agree here. I have a Magnaflow muffler, S&B CAI, and a custom tune from Hemifever. The truck sounds great, way more powerful and I'm getting a tad bit better gas milage. Haven't done the gears (yet), but am really happy with it's performance.

Well, I have an Opinion....here's what I did and why, or how I sold myslef:

First I knew what I wanted in the end. thats importaint and it seems you do to.

Vararam intake= AIR IN

Exhaust out, I looked at how the two exahaust banks come together, and didnt like the cobra snake bends and the reducion in area caused by going from the two into one.
Now granted the gases are cooling and reducing in volume and velocity, but as I recall the "choking point " right there is a reduction in area alone.

not sure on the sizes, but I think the two pipes from the mainifold are 3" ( I cant rememeber the sizes I have it written down soomewhere so Ill just use the numbers I think I remember..they may be off but this will illustrate my thoughts).

area of the 3" pipe is 7.068 X 2 pipes = 14.136
the area of the single 4" pipe is 12.5"
Thats about a 12% difference ( 12.5 / 14.136= .884)

SO a 12% reduction in area, which is AFTER the bends and dont forget the two exaoust pipes are crammed in together , each taking half of the single pipe, which changes the flow, although laminar ( straight) at that point, the half moon shape after the bands and reduction convinced me to eliminate this. Maybe the design is there to help performance or noise or somethign, IDK, its gone ( well actually its behind my garage for now)

So I went to my local exhaust shop and we looked at it together. They cut the snake pit off, ran two independent pipes all the way back to an Excellorator muffler , 2 into one, two out leaving the rest of the exhaust stock. I kept the resos casue I dont want drone.

All this cost me 350 bucks and a bag of breakfast sandwiches.

Its got a nice rumble at idle, not to loud when cruizin/ long trips, but at WOT its has a nice loud growl.

I also run a 180 tstat and a hemifever ( dont we all?) 93 oct tune.

I would say from a performance stand point Long tubes with an X pipe would be nice, but for my truck I didnt want to got that far. this week anyway. I have a bunch of bling bling and clutch fan grill shutter removals to keep me occupied for a while.
