So I have hit 1600 miles on my 14 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi. I know after reading the synthetic oil thread alot of people suggest doing the first oil change well before 3000 miles because its been through the break in period.
I called my dealer because I have one free oil change through them. They say that they are putting in Mobil 1 in the vehicle. I'm not to sure what was put in the Ram to begin with.
I found a Amsoil dealer in the area and I am buying Amsoil signature series 5w20 and a Amsoil EA15K50. Registered as a preferred customer so It is worth purchasing
So the question is should I go ahead and use the free oil change and change out the oil at 3000ish miles or should I skip the free oil and go right to the Amsoil.
Also Amsoil isn't going to void my warranty because it meets criteria but is it something I should inform the dealer of if I go straight to Amsoil?

I've never owned a Brand new car so I really don't want to mess anything up warranty wise. And after reading so much Amsoil should help with the "Tick" which really isn't that bad as is. But it will also help take care of the vehicle long term. Only thing better is to go with Red line.

Also I know changing the filter can cause oil to leak on things. How hard is it to just hold like a gallon ice cream bucket under it to keep the oil off everything?

Typically you want to wait a little longer to go to Synthetic to let the engine finish breaking in but most likely by 3k miles it's essentially well seated in mating areas.

Factory fill should be Pennzoil yellow bottle. Technically in order to avoid warranty issues you want to use a 5W-20 with the Chrysler MS-6395 spec listed on the back but a claim would have to be pretty severe for a dealer to deny. There are synthetic's that meet the spec such as Penn Platinum and Redline with the latter being known to avoid a ticking Hemi. The Amsoil (Sig Series) also meets the spec and is very good oil, I used to sell it.

Thank you. I'll let them do the standard oil change at the dealer and then do the full synthetic change around 3000 miles. Thank you for the help

Pennzoil platinum is the oil to use in that hemi. I don't know the cost difference between the amsoil and the Pennzoil. I don't know what the benefit would be using out of it cost more. I changed mine at 2300. You can use the bucket or Ziploc bag or 2 liter bottle, for the filter.

If you can readily get the Penzoil platinum at a fair price, go for it; it's great oil. I'm sure one of our Amsoil dealers could PM you a price for comparison. The benefit to Amsoil is the longer change intervals; their OE matches OE spec 5,000Km. The Amsoil XL takes it up to 15,000Km/6Mos. and the Signature is 40,000Km/1 year. After skipping 2 changes (I used to change my oil every 5,000 religiously) I see and feel the benefit. It also puts less oil through the system even if you recycle it.

Butters: I cover my whole power steering unit with a sheet of tin foil and use a zip lock bag.
After you do it a couple times there is little mess.

I would at least get your FREE oil change!

One thing too remember-->There are MANY models of Autos that are shipped to the dealers with 0-10 miles on them filled with synthetic oil...

I personally don't believe a so called synthetic oil effects the so called break in period of today's engines.

I will not comment on oil brands-->Every owner has their own opinion and thoughts on which brands they THINK are best--->Very similar to Religion!

The pennzoil platinum is 26 bucks before tax. The amsoil is 31 bucks with tax. I went with the Amsoil because of what I have read. I know that the PP is a good oil, just never been a fan.

How is 7 quarts of Amsoil that cheap? I was surprised how expensive a 5 qt jug of plain Pennzoil is compared to Mobil 1 but the latter does not carry the Chrysler spec unfortunately.

I signed up for the amsoil preferred customer program. 20 bucks a year for 25% off everything they sale.

That's how much I paid for the whole oil change. Would had been cheaper to get a gallon and 2 quarts but.... the dealer was out of gallons. So next time I'll buy a gallon.

Those prices look a little more normal. I used to sell and use Amsoil exclusively but it's a tough sell with how cheap Mobil 1 is. Not arguing oil properties, it's hard to get people to swap. I may try the Redline but I drive so little a year of driving may only be 6k miles on my truck. Kind of a waste of synthetic.

You can get Pennz Platinum 5-20W at WalMart pretty cheap. I don't know why the dealer would be putting in Mobil 1 it doesn't meet Ram standards. You can put in syn oil already they don't hone the cylinder walls the way they did years ago.

The filter isn't that bad to change just put a pile of old grease rags on top of the power steering and it catches 90% of what comes out. it is a little messy but not as bad as people say.

Butters: I am curious -->How long do you have intentions on running this $76 oil change?

Jag: the dealership that I purchased my Ram from uses M1 in most of it's oil changes due too the fact Pennzoil does a horrid job keeping them stocked with their products ! Especially 0W-40, so they use M1 0W-40 exclusively. Service Mgr even recommends M1...

I was told their dealership will NOT void any warranty work pertaining too the engine for using M1!

I wanted to try PP for my summer oil change. I will be going back to M1 for my winter oil change.

I hope I can change it once a year. I do not forsee using the truck for more than 10000 miles a year. Breaks down to 8 bucks a month. I believe that's a fair trade.

Still at less than 10$ a quart per oil change with a very good synthetic oil that to me has out performed PP and Mobil1 in my own truck and they aren't any less expensive in my part of the country than the Amsoil. Good find man.

Thank you. Anyone can become a preferred member. It's 20 bucks a year. And 25% off everything. I'll be moving all 3 vehicles over to it. Might even look at their transmission and other fluids. See it it would be worth the change

The rear diff fluid going to Syn in my Dakota had made the biggest mileage impact. It was still small but free gain really compared to engine parts. I used to give friends my dealer pricing on Amsoil or a very small markup, can't hurt to ask around. I don't know of any reports of whether or not the oil effects the Hemi tick however. Mine is nice and quiet currently.

I haven't noticed the "tick" to be honest. So we shall see when 3k comes around. I went head with the free oil change till 3k. Then it's straight to amsoil.

I am on the dealer program with Amsoil and I do what is stated above with my close friends. Basically I pay to be a dealer and in the end it pays for itself over the course of a year.
