On my other cars and trucks when using the auto mode on my light switch the lights came on with the ignition switch. On my new Ram the head lights only come on when it gets dark outside. Today driving in the fog I had to manually put the switch to headlights on. Is this the way they are supposed to Operate?

That's how my 2011 is. I'm guessing your others had daytime running lamps.

All of my cars, including my current and last ram, auto headlights operated by low outside light conditions.

If the lights came on every time the truck started, that wouldn’t be “Auto”. That’d be “On”.

The sensor in my 2018 is not as sensitive as I would like. I have also turned the lights from auto to on in certain conditions when I felt they should have come on. Thinking about putting something over the sensor.

Thats normal operation. In my '16 I have a setting that the headlights will turn on if the wipers are on as well ( fog, rain, snow etc )

Thanks to all that replayed.
Is there a adjustment somewhere to correct the sensitivity. While on a trip to Yosemite on HWY 120 I went through a tunnel that has a curve in it. My headlights didn’t come on very dark in there and very scary.

If they didn't come on in a tunnel then there may be something wrong with the sensor. Otherwise your lights are behaving as normal, for a truck without DRLs.

You can most likely have the DRLs activated, but unless you want to become a tinkerer with your truck you'll need to go to the dealer to get them activated--for a nominal stealership fee.

I didn't think that was a setting (thought it was a programmed function that the headlights came on with wipers in auto mode)

to clarify, I'm not trying to imply that you are wrong.......saying my "thoughts" must have been wrong

There is a setting in the radio whether you want the headlights to come on with the wipers. It only works in the headlight Auto mode.

My headlights (when set to auto) come on when my wipers are on, it's a function of Auto. OP - there are a couple of sensitivity levels accessed in the settings area on your touchscreen (at least there are on mine).

And I feel mine is overly sensitive. If it's cloudy outside in Florida at 3:30pm the lights are on and I have to either turn them off or turn up the dash brightness to see the radio.

Todd, if you want your headlights to always come on in auto mode you could block the nub (sensor) on the dash to make it think it is always dark out.

we have 2019 Rams and could not find a way to get the headlights to come on/off with the ignition .. no settings worked and lights when on Auto would come on and off anytime they wanted .. So, i found a little rubber dunce hat shaped cap to put over the sensor on the dash ... now my headlights/driving lights come on at start up and off on shut down ... also turned off the headlight timer in uconnect so the door opening after shut off turns off the lights ... no more lights flashing at passing cars

A Black Bottle cap fit real nice over the sensor :) A little double sided tape in the cap holds it in place ! In the old days we turned our light on manually but I got spoiled with the newer cars with auto on :O

Next we will be noting things like checking tire pressure because the truck didn't tell us to do it. And things like having to manually switch the rear view mirror between day and night modes. :D:D:D

That’s how mine are. Kind of a pain in the ass in the late afternoon/early evening.
