So I put in a New head unit, dash speakers and 4 6x9s in the front and rear doors, original system was the base system with no amp. My problem is that the 6x9 3 ways seem to be producing only lows and low mids, and the ones in the dash are overpowering. I'm guessing there are in line crossovers somewhere between the head unit and the doors, where are they and can I remove them? I'm trying to avoid buying an amp and subs if I can.

I really doubt you will be happy without an amp. I know it sucks to have to go "back to the drawing board", but you really have most of the problem licked (aftermarket HU). Try keeping the stock HU for a real wallet/headache! Ask me how I know.

Since we are talking about a base unit w/out amp I am not aware of anything inline on the factory wiring; in all the research I did I could not find anyone that had run into it either leaving me to believe that any processing/crossovers were handled in the stock HU. That said I ran new wiring off the stock HU into a Audio Control LC7i to produce a clean signal then into an amp then to the new speakers and sub. MAJOR improvement.

Even if you went middle of the road on your new speakers its doubtful the new HU could push them adequately before distorting. This is JMO and I am more of a sound quality guy vs. urban artillery loudness kinda guy.

I can't stand distortion and I know running an amp will really upgrade the sound, but I know how 3 way speakers should sound, and when I fade it to the back there's barely any mids/highs at all. I would think the 50x4 new head unit would give me SOMETHING in the doors. What is keeping the frequencys
From getting to the speaker? This is frustrating.

I'd hook something else up to those 6x9's just to see if it really isn't how they sound before driving yourself crazy. Also try reversing the front and rear wiring to make sure the HU isn't crossing over at all.

This. The only way to be certain is to bypass the stock wiring, if just temporarily. If you do this please report back.

Any coaxial speakers are kind of a compromise vs. components. If I'm not mistaken the the 50x4 really equates to about 12.5 watts per channel assuming that is RMS and not peak power.

What brand of 6x9s are you running and RMS/Peak wattage?

I looked at a factory wiring diagram and I still didn't see anything. You have good equipment there...it needs more power.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I've read a little and talked to a few of my buddies at the sound shop about it. In order to get a full signal from your deck to aftermarket (or factory) speakers in the doors you will need a line summing device (JL Audio CleanSweep, some AudioControl units, etc). The Xover you mention is actually built into the deck/truck so that the "appropriate" sound signals are sent to the "appropriate" speaker.

The summing device will combine the different signals/channels and re-transmit them in full signal to all channels.

This was for the factory deck.... not sure if it's a computer thing or the factory deck with them being so integrated with each other.

You might try just running speaker leads directly from your deck to the door speakers, eliminating the factory connection between the deck and speakers, if you don't want to add amps.

The dash speakers will 100% of the time over power the rest of them due to the fact they are refelcting off the windshield and you also have a couple extra speakers being ran off something the usually is only ment to run 4. My suggestion is amp the doors and run dash off deck. You sir will have more highs with the three way 6x9s then you may want so be prepared to tune a little.
