I have been told manifold bolts are covered under the federal emissions warranty up to 100,000 miles by the dealer

Not true. Looks up the warranty manual.
Only the cat and PCM are covered under that warranty.

Dealer said mine was not covered.

I'm having a slight tick on cooler mornings and thinking about taking it to the dealership. My question is if they do end up replacing the manifold bolts, do they use a different type of bolt or is it the same that came out of the factory that will break in another 40k miles?

I have had bolts replaced on both sides to attempt to prevent the issue. Then when they broke had to have both sides manifolds replaced and bolts extracted between 90-100k. The cast iron warps and causes the bolts to snap off. If it happens to mine again I am switching to headers. One side was covered under warranty the other was not. I had no Dodge warranty only aftermarket warranty as I have an 09 and I am the second owner so no lifetime left.

I Just Checked Mine At 30,000 Miles

Good

However my Powertrain warranty is up

So

Maybe I should pull the manifolds

Bring them to my machine shop , have them resurfaced

And replace the manifold bolts with ???

Pretty easy access to everything with the front tires and plastic wheel wells out

Anyone try this preventive maintenance themselves , because it sounds like just a matter of time correct ???

Just buy a set of headers, Any long tubes will be better than those log manifolds , and use grade 8 hardware....... No more worries and some performance to boot...

I just got my truck back from having the manifolds replaced. Truck is a '13 and all work was done under powertrain warranty. They replaced both manifolds, all bolts & studs and both heat shields. It took one tech 2 entire days to do. He had to extract several busted studs. Truck feels great :)

Having started this thread back in May 2016 I guess I can update now that someone has brought it back to the top.

2 bolts eventually broke and it was covered under warranty. I just rolled 100k miles and no issues since other than the occasional hemi lifter tick.

I haven't owned a vehicle with over 100k miles since my first highschool car but I'd like to keep this as long as possible because of some the mods I've done, it's cosmetically still pretty good and nothing major has gone wrong. The 100k mileage is in the back of my mind but I'll roll with it until it starts costing me $$$.

I have close to 160k been pretty good. You will need to do wheel bearings and water pump somewhere between 130-150 I would guess.

What exactly mechanically is the tick? I seem to get it randomly sometimes and was going to try Royal Purple. My co-worker thought he had it lol but it was simple valve operation I am 99% sure. Mine actually gets a tick here and there and is loudest from the headers area. 304 stainless long tubes don't help with engine noise though...
If you've got headers and it's manifold bolts I'm pretty sure they won't cover it. If you had the stock exhaust manifolds on they would.

It did not take him 2 days lol. If it did he really sucks at his job.
I did both my sides in 8 hours. This included me removing the manifolds, 3 broken bolts, machining the manifolds flat again as they were warped and replacing gaskets and all bolts. Mind you I don’t have a bay or lift so I did this with just a jack. Also I am not a mechanic.
I’m assuming they just had your truck sitting around most of those 2 days not really working on it.
Anyways, at least you got it fixed and it didn’t cost you a thing which is the important part.

No, it literally took him 2 days. I stopped by the dealership 4 times and was kept in the loop by a buddy who's a tech at the dealership. They started at 9am on a Wednesday and had it done shortly before 4pm on the Thursday. The funny part is that they said they'd have it done by 1pm on the Wednesday.

I'll let the tech know you think he sucks at his job. Can I get your phone # in case he wants to discuss it with you? Maybe you can give him tips on how to be more efficient lol.

Sure, you can let him know I think he sucks. This is definitely not a 14-16 hour job. He should be able to do it a lot faster than I did since this is what he does and he is a mechanic. Thing is if I had to do it again it would probably go faster too since I’ve already done it once. So for him there really is no excuse since this is what he does day in day out.
It worked out ok for you cuz it was warranty work but I can’t imagine the people that they charge this kind of labour time to that are not under warranty.
Reality is, it’s not that hard of a job at all.
