HEMI tick

Yeah, I've had the light tick on startup for about 5k miles now. I've read and responded to a couple of similar posts on here. It started the day after my last oil change at 35k miles. I'm about to hit 40k. The tick lasts a few minutes till the truck warms up. On closer inspection, it seems to be coming from the passenger side manifold.

I've got a 10AM service appointment on Monday, of which I mentioned the manifold concern. I'm guessing it may be a/some manifold bolt/s breaking.

The truck is serviced at the dealer, so whatever it is they put in it. This is my 3rd RAM, I had no idea the owners manual suggested oil changes every 10k miles the day I purchased this truck, and service plan. Not knowing this, I went ahead and purchased the Plus plan which services the truck every 5k miles. In short, my oil life rarely falls below 50% by the time I bring it back in. Had I known I would have just gotten a standard plan..

10k miles on "whatever" the dealership puts in it is a bad idea imo. Stick with the 5k oci.

I haven't been given a reason to be paranoid by what my dealership uses. I usually don't worry about what I use till my service plans run out. Before I jump to dealership conclusions, I will say the dealership I go to has been awesome so far. Hopefully the trend continues.

Oil change interval is largely dictated by individual engines and how they are driven versus formula of oil. if I was going to do 10k mile oil changes I think I would want at least one uoa justifying it.

This. We have 3 vehicles in our family, 2 of which combined yearly mileage doesnt even come close to the "normal" 12K miles per year. The 3rd does about 9K per year.

I change oil based on the fact that its "old" rather than that it has a lot of miles on it. My truck stays outside 24/7 so Im slightly more concerned with oil quality because of that, but again it gets about 6K miles per year, so my OCI is almost always time based. Another concern for the 2 vehicles I drive is condensation because half of the year (winter) the oil never gets up to 212F (or even 200F) before I get to work.

I do plan on starting a regular UOA schedule at about 10K miles, should be OK enough mileage for break-in and by then Ill have about 3K miles on the first RL 5/30 OCI so I can see how much longer it will last (Im pretty sure I can get a year out of it if I wanted to, but would want a UOA to confirm)

I've never seen any issues with water in uoa's except for diesels. I've seen plenty in diesel uoa's, I just can't remember even one with a gas engine.

I've always been a full synthetic fan. I simply threw my hands in the air when I learned the truck didn't require service for 10k miles, or until the oil life indicator got low. So, I figure since I already paid for the extra oil changes, and since my oil indicator averages 50% when I go in every 5k miles, I would just let the dealer use what they recommend instead of throwing even more money at it. Once my plan runs out at 100k miles, and if I still own the truck, I will definitely use the good stuff. Till then, I'm just trying to get my money's worth.

This is the first truck I've owned equipped exactly the way I want it. If the Hemi tick becomes a bigger issue I will be EXTREMELY disappointed. I've owned two other RAM's with zero issues, two Wrangler JK's (one burned unbelievable amounts of oil), and I currently have a 16 Challenger RT+ shaker as well with zero issues.

Agree with above do an oil analysis , Blackstone lab, and see how the oil is doing at six thousand miles or so. Just my 2 cents.

I had hemi tick bad, so did the guy that created the thread in my sig, both of us killed hemi tick with redline 5w30, neither of us would use anything else. If it's bolts, great, if not try redline 5w30 and a royal purple filter. visit syn thread for more, read the hemi tick thread in my signature.

Awesome! Good to know! I'm hoping it's the bolts. Not that I'm beyond doing my own oil changes, but I would REALLY hate going this route when my service Plus plan still has 60,000 miles left on it. :/

Ok, so I've read through most of your tick thread. Then I went outside, it's 56F, the truck has been sitting for about 7 hours, hit the remote start, and the tick is definitely more of a pffft only on the passenger side. Once the truck warms up and drops idle, (less than 60 seconds later), it goes away. I'm no expert but I'm leaning even harder towards a manifold issue. Regardless, I am going to insist they check the bolts and pay the diagnostic fee if I have to. If they find nothing wrong with it I will give Rediline 5w30 and Royal Purple filter a shot. If that fixes the problem I will see how I can go about getting the rest of my service plan refunded. I can do my own service work and pay out of pocket for anything outside of my skill. I simply decided to take it easy on myself this round and purchase the service plan.

I am a lifter tick guy, really sensitive to it and done a lot of work with others on solving it. That to me sounds like exhaust tick.

One more thing you can do it put the mic under the truck, that also helps a little another source point to listen to, but my sense (and I can be wrong on this) is that is exhaust.

Here's mine lifter tick for sure, mind you it is not very bad because I went with redline 10w30, but you can kinda here the difference, especially under the truck near the cam. When I went to 5w30 redline the engine went silent, but you can here a minor lifter tick on the 10w30, when I was using other oils it was much worse but I don't have a recording. With lifter tick there tends to be a tap, and exhaust tends to be a whoosh, but it is sometimes very hard to differentiate.

I might consider taking it out of the garage and video/audio from under truck, there is some feedback with that.

Yeap I would check your bolts and see if they are broke first.

jrod, leaning toward exhaust leak. Lifter and exhaust leak "can" sound alike. One way that it is easy to determine. When you start in the morning and hear a screech/hiss (your pfff description is good while on high idle. When it stops, put your foot on the brake and put it in gear. If it comes back,,, 95% certain exhaust leak. Also you can take a socket and ratchet to the passenger side exhaust manifold. If you can turn the bolts easily, they are broken. The lifter to push rod tick displays on cold start for a few seconds and does not come back once the oil gets to the lifter,,most of the time. My ears could not hear what you are hearing in your video. You have confidence in your dealer. It should be the first thing they check, both sides.
