INFO - 2013-2018 8.4A /AN FW Notes (RA3/VP3-NA & RA4/VP4-NA & UAx)

I am new here and on brain overload with all the information here. I also want to upgrade. My 2014 Ram 1500 currently has a 8.4 VP4 RA3 (68224531AC) with nav but not turned on. Also have the shark fin antenna. I want the HD radio feature so I bought a VP4 RA4. Questions:
1. The unit I got is Canadian. Other than the non Sprint cell phone service, am I in for other issues?
2. The people who I bought it from say that the Nav is turned on. Will it still be turned on when the dealer adds the radio to the VIN?

Thanks in advance for the help. This forum has tons of information and it almost feels like taking a drink from a fire hose and yes I have done that before.

1) The Canadian radio will not support uConnect Services & Apps (req's sprint air card), but will work in the truck.

2) If you bought a RA4/VP4-CA (Canada) radio, it doesn't require Nav to be unlocked, only the RA3 radios. All RA4's are full Nav radios.
* I have seen posts about RA3 nav unlocked radios being moved to other trucks that still worked, but Nav unlock was wiped out when they did software updates. Make sure you get the VIN of the truck the radio comes out of just in case.

My thoughts...
If you have a factory RA3/VP3-NA radio I would keep it and sell the Canadian RA4 (or keep it as a spare).
You can update it to the latest downloadable (uConnect update site) FW v16.x which will supposedly enable the HD radio feature now. You can also activate NAV on your factory RA3 and maintain the possibility of uConnect services if you choose. Its possible to activate NAV for much less than the $400-$500 that the dealer wants. Send me a PM with your email if interested for contact info.

Post a picture of the back of the radio you purchased.

I have the FW 17.11.7 currently installed in the original radio so I am past 16. Still no HD radio.
As for the new radio, I am going to return it. Going to try to find a 2014 VP4 RA4 NA radio.

Returning the radio. Had to pay a restocking fee even though they misrepresented the radio.
If it does not have the Ibiquity license printed on the label on back, it is not capable of receiving HD radio. The NA radios have this, the CA radios do not.

My truck was a Hawaii ordered truck and the factory removed Sat radio and u connect, so I don't have a Sprint connection in truck and no shark fin antenna on cab, which is fine with me, since I won't use u connect apps etc or sat radio. But I want HD radio and navigation now. I found a cheap GPS antenna I can mount under dash, but my issue now is what 8.4AN VP4 radio will work. Will 2016 radios work in my 2013 since I don't have u connect? I won't need to worry about ota updates too. Just need to know what year radios will work and out of what vehicles. I see a lot of Chrysler 200 radios for sale. Also the CA radios should work great for me if I am not mistaken since they don't have u connect too. Any replies are appreciated.

I know a 13 , 14 & 15 NA or CA radio will work , the 16 & 17 NA. Radios may work , but some have had issues .
Also you won't need an additional antenna , the puck antenna you have now will serve as your GPS antenna for Navigation just fine .
I'm using a puck style antenna now in my 14 Ram with a 15 RA4NA and my nav works great .
I've also used a 13 Canadian RA4 and the nav worked with my puck antenna as well .

I do not recommend a 2016 radio in any 13 or 14 truck. I've tried 2 and had the same issue with both not working right in my 13 ram. They seem to work fine for 16/17 trucks and some earlier trucks but it's too hit or miss IMO. There seems to be some difference in the earlier BCM's on some (not all) trucks that won't let them turn on correctly. I have had a 16 radio not work on my 13 truck, sent to someone with a 16 ram and it worked fine.

As far as hd radio goes, apparently some -CA radios have it, but all the Ra4 -NA radios from a Ram, Cherokee, viper will have HD, and should be compatible with your truck. There are lists of verified Ra4 PNs on the first 5-7 posts as reference to help you. A 13-14 Ra4-na would give you the lowest chance of problems. A 15 Ra4 will have slightly newer map files and a 17 Ra4 may have a few additional features but I believe the latest v17.x update made them all nearly the same feature/appearance wise other than map database. The latest map update from FCA requires v17.x fw and costs $150.

I don't normally keep a detailed list of the Canadian and Ra3 radios, but see post 7 for the partial list of Canadian Ra4 that members have reported work in the trucks. 68238626AG appears to be a verified Ram PN and should work.

Hi, do you have a tricky for the Anti-Theft code? I just connect the radio, but the radio would anti-theft code.

You can get the anti-theft code for free at your dealership , all they need is the radios S/N , many get it over the phone in just a couple minutes.
I know there are sites like Navrepair.com & others to obtain the code but I think they charge you and you may have to wait a day .

Hi, i just installed with succes 68238626AG from longhorn 2500 2015 to 1500 sport 2015. I have updated to last FW 17_11_05 and all work very good!
