@SitKneelBend Been following this thread in the shadows until now. I've been toying with the same idea (regarding the hvac conversion) and did a bit of digging. This may be of some use to a lot of people.

These are the parts needed to fabricate the hvac conversion harness.

1 HVAC CONTROL MALE https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/molex/0307001081/3044523
8 PINS https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/te-connectivity-amp-connectors/1393366-1/2700940
1 HVAC CONTROL MODULE MALE https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/te-connectivity-amp-connectors/1318917-1/2273522
24 pins https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/te-connectivity-amp-connectors/1123343-2/2054072
1 HVAC CONTROL MODULE FEMALE https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/te-connectivity-amp-connectors/1376103-1/2273523
24PINS https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/te-connectivity-amp-connectors/1376109-1/2331294

I've yet to dig into the wiring specifics. Got sidetracked on using the cargo cam input as a front cam LOL

EDIT: I'm 100% sure of the fitment of the 8 pin connectors. 99.5% sure for the HVAC module. I pulled the PN off of my connector and cross referenced so I am fairly certain it is correct, but until someone gets it in their hand and actually plugs it in, I can't say 100% - also there is an extra connector on the harness that I believe is for the 4 position blower, which doesn't really apply here)
That all looks right but I'm using the 8.4" conversion harness from @Mpgrimm2 so I didn't actually purchase any of those parts myself. In addition @Jimmy07 posted up the wiring diagrams for the UAV/UAX screen which can be found here...

Not sure if this link will work but this is from 5th gen Ram forum...

You might be interested in my thread here if you are trying to add camera inputs...

@Mpgrimm2 might be able to shed some light on the 4 position blower stuff. He makes a conversion harness for that too.

I've seen his post. What perplexes me is the UA* series and UB* series differences. Infotainment sells some sort of magic box (genie max) to make the UC5 *ai* voice commands work? Do you have any idea what this is all about, and why? Any way we can work around this? I hate throwing money at the wall because someone else already figured it out. If they can figure it out, we can too. I just need to know why - I don't have the hardware in my hands as of yet. Side note, I wish there was a list of all of the 8.4 units and their revisions in order, to ease in ordering.

Perfect. Could probably even get the cargo camera to trigger on the bed light button. Ideas in motion.

EDIT: also, link did not work, but I figured it out. Gotta change the stars with the website.

Hey everyone,

I've been following your progress, and it's clear now that adapting the 12.1" screen from a 5th-gen Ram into my truck is actually possible! Here's where I'm coming from:

My Current Setup:

  • Truck: 2014 EcoDiesel with single-zone AC, 8.4" Uconnect, Alpine audio, heated steering wheel, front heated seats, front & rear parking sensors, and a backup camera.
What I Have & What I'm Considering:

  • Three Anycubic Kobra 3 printers and one Anycubic Photon Mono X resin printer.
  • I'm even thinking about getting the Kobra Max to print the bezel in one piece if it fits the hardware budget.
  • I'm willing to invest in a 3D scanner if that will help the project.
My Initial Understanding of What's Needed:

  • The radio module and the 12.1" screen.
  • The Alpha OBD app paired with an Alpha OBD-compatible interface.
  • Likely a BCM from a newer truck? what am i looking for here?
  • Possibly some wiring adapters or pinout modifications?
  • can you list what you had to purchase/mod thus far?
Could someone outline what else is needed to reach your current progress? I'm more than happy to help with prototyping and can provide scans of my truck and parts if necessary.

Thanks for all your work so far—your progress has really inspired me to dive into this project.
The radio module and the 12.1" screen - separate pieces and often mis-advertised for sale with only the screen absent the radio itself. I paid $700 shipped after speaking with a salvage yard on the phone to lower the price of the screen and radio combo without the dash/vent surround included (from a 2021 Ram 1500).

The Alpha OBD app paired with an Alpha OBD - compatible interface - correct, I used the Android Version without issue

Likely a BCM from a newer truck? what am i looking for here? - Definitely, the BCM from a 2014 does not contain the logic/line for the Disassociated display as that appears to have first been introduced in 2016. I got a 2016 BCM for ~$75 on eBay. One thing I'm unsure off is if there are any differences in BCM for the Eco Diesel. I would confirm this before purchasing a BCM and if you decide to go this route I'll give you some tips before doing the swap so you don't have to wrestle with the things I did (I'm thinking of starting another thread with my experience as you'll run into a few weird things that "kinda" mostly resolve on their own). The only difference I noticed physically from my 2014 BCM and the 2016 BCM I installed was the addition of one PIN to the 2016 (but wiring diagrams for both says this PIN is not used.

1739981266731.png1739981420390.jpeg1739981514598.png

Possibly some wiring adapters or pinout modifications? - Yes, see the post I linked to above for @masnecar you can buy the wiring harnesses on eBay too (the one linked below contains both cables you will need HVAC and LVDS)

can you list what you had to purchase/mod thus far? - mostly answered above but @Mpgrimm2 also gifted me some parts to mock up something for 3D print prototyping.

Following up with the last item and your interest in 3D printing, I'm a script kiddy when it comes to 3D printing. My wife bought me a Bambu Labs A1 for Christmas and that triggered the avalanche on proceeding with this project (haven't set it up yet because I want to build an enclosure for it in my workshop). I'll have a limited print area so all of my thoughts thus far have been around making a modular system but it would be great to bounce my ideas around with someone with more experience (or lacking that someone wanting to learn this with me). If you get a scanner definitely let me know and I'll send you an 8.4" bezel to scan and modify because that could greatly improve the design of a 3D printed solution for this (could give some more wiggle room to slide things up or down and play with angles). Right now I'm considering a floating design that actually leaves the existing 8.4" bezel in place to secure the radio module and will be covered by a bespoke 3D printed (tablet style?) mount that covers the 8.4" opening (I can draw something up later to explain but this is mostly me thinking out loud presently and working with what I already have set up). The screen itself is actually pretty small when disassembled.

Just wanted to say I'm glad yourself, @masnecar , and @G-Ride990 are getting excited about this. The more the merrier IMO!

I haven't decided if I am going to start modifying my 5th gen just yet but this will be near the top of my list if I keep my truck. Seems like there is not many guys here modifying 5th gens like the 4th gens sadly.

Great job getting this working in your 4th gen.

Let me know if you need any help with the 3d printer or modeling. I have a BambuLabs X1C and I do 3d printing and DFAM (design for additive manufacturing) for a living although for work we use metal powder.

Sweet man! I might just bounce some questions off you on the "how" of things. Right now I'm just fiddling with TinkerCad and plan on making everything in that.

I'm doing this with the 4C but the Uconnect 5 should work too. theRamguy over on the 5th gen forums has collated A LOT of this data and placed it on a google drive he has shared. Here is the link (lots of word docs and part numbers).

Feel free to ask more questions here though, I think I have my head wrapped around pretty much everything and have read over 300 pages on the subject from the forums. As for Infotainment, their OBD Genie is nothing special and you can do everything it does using AlfaOBD to program the radio and BCM. Theirs is simply an OBD device that once plugged in runs the commands itself. If the changes aren't captured in docs from that G-Drive above, then it shouldn't be hard to figure out the changes and program them with AlfaOBD. I have a Pacifica with a UConnect 5 we can compare settings with too and a Jeep Grand Cherokee loaner I'm going to pull the config from before giving it back to the dealership.

EDIT: Also pulled this from "somewhere" (I think theRamguy)

I'm absolutely willing to work together on this. I'm an IT guy, but I've always been a bit hesitant to mess with the CAN bus and BCM since that's a whole different ball game. Your point about the BCM is well taken—I’ll need to do some research on the EcoDiesel BCM, and it might be best to look for one from a 2016 or later model to be safe.

I like your mounting idea, though I feel it might be a little too high for my liking. Still, I'll take what I can get! I'm quite comfortable with 3D printing and have been getting great prints out of my machines. While modding and designing are relatively new to me, I believe it won't be too challenging, especially with a 3D scanner on board. If we can track down some CAD files for the bezel, that would be a huge help—I’ll also look around for them.

Please DM me; I'd love to share my cell number or Discord info so we can collaborate on this project!

I'm in IT to and AlfaOBD is super easy once you get the hang of it. No coding or anything required, the dev did all of that for you, it's just a menu tree for setting variables. BCM is even easier as you can set the entire config all at once from your old BCM. IF something goes wrong, it can typically easily be rectified so long as you took a backup (even if you didn't you can have someone else with a working config check settings).

I can see why some might not like this setup and want it to be lower, I'm 6'3" with a long torso so the radio at this level doesn't even cover any window space for me (the rearview mirror is more of a blindspot). Right now it's also propped up higher than I intend in the final setup just because I'm utilizing an aluminum tablet holder (because I had it and it works well). I'm also open too suggestions on this, I'm thinking with my current idea it will stick up about 4" over the sunglasses holder current position (there is a circuit board on the back of the screen that needs the space for the screen connectors) . I'll take a picture and make a (poor) drawing of what I'm thinking and post it here since PMs won't allow pictures anymore.

I'll shoot you a PM tomorrow with contact info, looking forward to working with you on this!

I see your point about mounting the screen about 4 inches above the dash. I think working toward that goal is the most productive approach. While it's possible to install it lower if you want to forgo physical controls, I'm on board with your plan.

I've spent several hours searching for modified dash examples for this setup but haven't found any clear guidance or examples from others who've done something similar. I did come across a post where someone kept the bezel, but I believe our approach will look the best.

Money is tight for me right now, so I'll need to start tracking down some parts, and the 3D scanner is in the plan as well. Do you know of any specific radio or screen models I should avoid? I’m aware that with the 8.4" Uconnects from the Classics, only certain part numbers are acceptable, while others won’t work—does the same apply here?

Also, it seems the BCMs for this truck aren’t very different if at all so i should be good there.

As far as BCMs go, I "think" they are the same for EcoDiesels, but I just wanted to have you verify that before proceeding. I can look up what part number is spit out for my VIN and you can look up the same and if they match they should be good to go. The most important thing is that it is from a 2016+ Ram, I went with 2016 because it's the closest in model year to my 2014 with the features I needed, but I'm sure other Classic BCMs will likely work (maybe @skuppy069 can answer that for us).

If you wanted to keep the controls that come in the screen surround, you'll need an additional custom CANBUS module that forum member @Roman217 makes, I spoke with him and he said he can still make these last week. For now, I'm not going that route as I'm looking to completely delete those controls.

As for parts, all of the 12.1" UAX screens should be compatible but there are now two flavors of radio module that you can choose from, 4C and 5 (mine is a 2021 4C P/N: 68472372AF which is not in the following list of part numbers). All of these are the 4C:

12” radio modules:
68429170Ax- 2019/2020 DT UCX (Canada market)
68329882AJ- 2019/2020 DT UCX (Canada market)
68429169Ax- 2019/2020 DT UAX (US market)
68317978Ax- 2019/2020 DT UAX (US market)
68378394Ax- 2019 HD UCX (Canada market)
68378392Ax- 2019 HD UAX (US market)

2022 was the first year for UConnect 5 of which I do not know the part numbers for. I used Car-Part.com to source mine, but they are often mis-listed or not listed at all in the DB so you'll end up needing to look at pictures and gather VINs to check window stickers/build sheets to verify what certain trucks actually have in them ( I always talk to the folks on the phone to verify parts first).

I've only found one example of a detailed 3D plan that will help as someone has modeled the sunglasses holder area for a custom mount. I believe this can be re-mixed as the back/top of the new screen housing.

Here is generally what I'm picturing as the footprint of the new 12.1" screen mount. It will attach using only the two screws under the rubber mat on top of the dash.

Okay, yes, this is what I was thinking. Do you have the measurements from side to side, including the outside edges of the bezel? Also, what’s the thickness of the bezel width wise?

I was considering mounting it behind the existing bezel, then cutting part of the top bezel and the sunglass holder to slot it in, so it’s slightly recessed. After that, I could 3D print a cover and a fan for the top section and board. I think that would make it look more factory.

Can you mock up a crude picture of what you're thinking? Just trying to visualize it...

Crude but works lol basicly the green sections would be BEHIND the stock bezel instead of on the outside this would need cutting a section of the sunglass holder or the trim of it thats on the faceplate i belive looking at the pictures out in order for the screen to sit further back in the dash and I dont have a screen so just judging on this lol.

Also another thought do we need to upgrade the USB port in the console for this to work as well to something like this:

would have to cut out the section in red and looks like the radio unit might be a bit to close to reses it may need to have that go back about 1/4 of a inch if possible? but with a pice of eva foam on it may actually give us a good molunting option.

Got it, I see no reason why that would not work, my only concern (in my current setup) is that the radio screen would be tensioned on the back of the radio module metal to metal. I used A LOT of foam to stop the screen from rattling in my current ghetto setup but the screen weight will be greatly reduced (probably 60%+) when the aluminum frame is removed and a 3D printed bezel used.

That being said, I only mounted the radio module there because I'm out of room behind the radio (I have a lot going on back there). You could easily mount the radio module somewhere else and use longer cables to reach the screen inputs which would leave nothing but air where/how you want to mount it. I'll see if I can snap a picture of a spare bezel in front of the screen so you can see how it will look like that (kinda). If I remember correctly, you'll see just a little of the metal frame on the screen itself from the dimensions of the 8.4" bezel.

Here are the pics (that's the bezel I'm sending you too, it has scuffs on the part you want to cut out so it's a good candidate for the finished product too). Sorry about the angles, it's a hard picture to get and protrusions on the back of the bezel prevent it from sitting flush without modifiction.

Well just ordered the kobra 3 max since we need to print rack mounts for a new device the company paid for it and this is able to print the entire bezel in 1 solid peace if need be but its a pre order so may take a month or so to get in hand.
