Looking for some opinions on intakes for my '14 1500 with the 5.7L.

I like the looks of the vararam but being in PA I am a bit concerned of people reporting it getting iced up and wet when driving in snow or rain.

Seriously looking at the s&b.

I know there are is k&n and as well as check knock off options.

Looking for opinions from people who have experience with each of these options.

Should be fine. I live in Idaho and have never had anything remotely on the intake in the winter.

I have had both S&B AND Vararam on my 17.
S&B was great, looked good and there was a noticeable difference in sound. I was running a Pulsar and the S&B really blocked access to the pulsar so switched to vararam.
Vararam hands down is the best one for me!! Looks great,(with custom painting), no issues with filtering for me.....but Im in Socal

If you zoom in on the S&B pic you can just see a corner of the black pulsar and see the lack of access to the pcm.
The way it mounts It is not an easy filter housing to be messing around with

Rain doesn't seem to be an issue with the Vararam, but blowing drifting snow,or wet slushy snow can cause you grief with one.If you live where you get either kind of snow, hang onto your stock airbox and put it back on during the winter. There's pics floating around of them full of snow,if you are parked facing into a snowstorm with a decent wind, and I had a buddy who put one on his 2012 then drove it out to show me,roughly 30 miles during one of southern Alberta's chinooks,(which are warm westerly winds where we'll go from -20 to 35F or more in a matter of hours),and the roads had turned from ice to about 3" of slush,by the time he'd got to my place in traffic the filter had filled up from enough slush thrown up by the cars in front of him, that it had got wet enough to actually sag down and leave a fair sized gap between the filter and the lid on the front, and consequently put a bunch of slushy /dirty wet snow crap into his throttle body and intake manifold.I had to drive him home to pick up his stock airbox and we re-installed it on my driveway, after that he only ran the vararam during the summer, and ran his stock airbox during the winter

Why do you want an aftermarket CAI? Truth be told, the stock set up does a pretty damn good job. I have a Vararam on my truck, as I have had on the past 2 other trucks I have had. I put them on for increased performance and looks. I have not had the problems Rick describes---probably cause I live in Texas LOL.

I live in michigan and went S&b for the exact reasons you are describing. Honestly the stock box with a good filter is pretty good. But I do love the S&B.

You guys running plug in the S&b or out? I know it’s been posted other places. Just thought I’d get thoughts of those here. Hoping to put mine on here in a couple weeks. Now that winter seems gone in IL

S&B here with the plug out. Before that.....stock with K&N filter.
I must be the only one on this forum that likes the sound change over the stock box....lol
If you go with S&B strongly recommend Moe's Performace for a vendor.
Never had a better buying experience than with Moe's

Thanks all for the feedback!

As to why I want an intake...

Put your boots on BS is coming...
I tell my wife the reason I am getting an intake is because it will help tow the camper better and I will save money because it will improve fuel economy....

The truth is...
I love the sound. They typically are quiet when at idle or under normal driving and the bad @$$ under "spirited" driving conditions.

I know the "obvious" question is, if I am just looking for sound and not performance why buy a designer brand. The answer is simple, sever years ago I blew a head gasket in a car after nearly hydro-locking the engine due to a very poorly design aftermarket intake.

What happens if it gets submerged? Say you drive through a creek?

They still pull air from the headlight area so you'd have to be pretty deep for it to have enough vacumn to suck water up into the box.The factory box also sucks air from the high pressure area in front of the tire.Look real close at the piece of vertical plastic the stock air box hooks to on the fender, and follow it down, you'll see it's open at the bottom to allow air in from the front tire area and the headlight area. The Volant and older S&B's copied the factories set-up by having another scoop area down low.

Love the vararam but in NY (not the past two winters) I was concerned with snow. Volant is great but pricey. Went with the old fall back K&N.
