If its a county vehicle it probably has 500,000 miles worth of hours idling. I deal with alot of municipalities and they start their trucks in the am and they run all day weather they move or not.

For sure on that. Idling if they need to or not. Isn't the the suspected cause of hemi cam/lifter problems in police cars? All the idling.

I bet the number of pentastar problems with Ram 1500s is low given there has to be fewer of them than pentastar powered cars, vans, jeeps, etc.

thanks for all the input. Rocker arms were breaking because they werent the correct replacements. It wont idle now but does run with throttle, with p016,017,and 020 codes. Most likely the chain stretched with the new OEM 3.6 rockers that snapped and it is jumping time on that bank. Ill replace the engine instead of trying to isolate the issue of timing sensor, new chain and tensioner, etc. My question is how to clear all the pending and permanent codes before putting another engine in. Will the stealership flash the PCM?

i bet there are way more 3.6 engines, then you’d think.... they are in everything.

The Cherokee has the 3.2, not the 3.6... the same engine, but with a smaller bore.

so it seems like some people are thinking its not changing the oil. Good luck with your 3.6. Just for reference, yes it is a little different but still internal combustion - my 2017 Kenworth goes 50,000 miles between oil changes and clocks over 500,000 before needing any engine work. That much difference in a bearing? Its not that Chrysler cant build better products, its just that people think its normal to have engines quit. Kia I had was changed 3000 miles every time on oil and completely lost the #1 rod bearing at 122,000 miles, so I am going to say that if passenger cars lasted longer, the manufacturer wouldn't be able to sell you a new one...

I absolutely get that, what I meant was the number of pentastars vs hemis specifically in Ram 1500s. I think there's a lot more pentastars in everything else, more so than Ram 1500s.

Not all would agree, but having owned a 2017 Pentastar Ram and now my 2019 Ram 1500 classic w/ hemi (both 3.21 gears), there's very little driveability difference between the two for day/day use for me. Like I've said, the hemi has more punch to it as you'd expect, but more often than not, If I had ear plugs in, I wouldn't know the difference.

Which engine is more "junk" than the other? Hard to say. I'm sure there's lots of 200-300K miles later model year hemis out there. Lots of pentastars too and that engine isn't nearly as old.
