Question:

Were limited slip differentials available for the 01 Ram 1500 4x2 from the factory?

If so, was it standard or optional equipment and how do I tell what kind of differential my truck has?

I don't personally know if it was available, but i can tell you an easy way to find out for yourself.....jack the rear up so both wheels are off the ground. spin one of the wheels forward, if the other wheel rotates the opposite direction you have an open differential, and if the other rotates the same direction you have limited slip.

Usually the build paper on the glove box door has that. In lieu of that, you can mail Chrysler your trucks vin # and they will send you the build sheet.

The wheel test is bit of a misnomer. My truck will spin both rears opposite directions unless one tire is grabbed. Then they will both go the same direction.
This is because factory LSDs have a low "breakover torque" that allows them to differentiate smoothly. It's also why they're not very effective ...especially when you need them most.

Thanks for the info, guys.

@okiespaniel, I didn't know that about factory LSDs. Maybe I'll consider upgrading to an aftermarket one.

Good idea. The factory LSD is fine for the average driver with a stock truck. It is very forgiving in icy conditions.

When more torque, larger tires or real traction in more extreme situations is needed...it fails. Eventually the weak spring clips that make it work start breaking....:Grenade:

Upgrading to a Detroit (or Detroit Locker) or Powertrax is the recommended route. Something without clutches or cones.

Something else to add to the list of mods I want to make.

By the time I'm done with it, I'm going to have more in it than what It cost to buy in the first place. :)

Lol. It's amazing how quickly you can dump money into mods

I usually try to spread my mods over a few years for just that reason...that's why I've kept my truck so long. Well that, and lack of road salt. :birgits_tiredcoffee

Quick figure...22 k for truck + mmmm...maybe 5 grand in mods...mostly in tires....devided by 11 years ownership = just about trade in value on a good day.
