So, I recently had to rebuild the top end of my Powerwagon because the MDS failed. Long story short, the MDS stayed wide open and the lifter rod seized up and wore the lobe off in the cam shaft. What led me to the discovery was the sloppy ticking noise when I hit the gas and it rattled off like crazy! Why MDS is on a heavy duty truck is stupid to me. A mechanic I was talking to told me that this is becoming so common with all of the vehicles (all manufacturers) because they all use the same basic principles of shutting off half of the cylinders for fuel economy. You can disable the feature but it will void all warranties but it makes you mileage even worse (I turned it off and my mileage was around 8 mpg so I turned it back on)
And to make it even better, my wife’s Cadillac Escalade ESV had the same issue the next month, smh.

far to common a problem for ALL cars now. Change the oil every 4k is the only real solution, while youre there install an MDS delete kit!

That's easier said then done,as you also have to tune the engine for a mds delete cam,and it looks like his truck is a 2015,so he'd need an unlocked pcm to tune it.If you're using factory parts the only non-mds cams are the ones used in the 6 speed 5.7 and 6.4 Challengers,or a Hellcat cam

Here's what happens to your cam when you lifter collapses. #1 cylinder, 2016 2500 Ram 6.4, 120K miles, 6K repair bill with new cam, lifters, exhaust manifold bolts, and replacing all spark plugs.

The lifter in your picture did not just "fail." The lifter turned 90 degrees in the bore likely due to the stabilizing bracket becoming disconnected from the lifter.

They usually fail, and then the owner keeps on driving it long enough the lifter wears down far enough to catch the edges of the lifter on the lobe, then it spins in the hold down tray

Yes it would have to be tuned for MDS delete but a good tuner can do that easily, here in the PRNY (NYS) its cost $250 which is well worth it.

Your not tuning a 15 for $250,first off you need an unlocked pcm, then you either have to buy the HP program with credits,or a crappy Diablo handheld tuner, then find a good tuner.
If you're gonna answer a question,at least be honest ;)

Let me be more specific, take your truck to a professional tuner and have them disable it. Here, in the PRNY that cost me $250 in 2024...
A few of my coworkers have taken their trucks in and had the job done, all different years....

Spend 16 minutes and watch this complete video, you might change your mind about just turning it off.The lifters actually get more oil when in 4 cylinder mode

That does squat to put more oil on the cam lobes or lifter wheel.
They are hung out in the open in the crankcase with no pressurized oil fed to the lobes or roller on the lifter, they are strictly oiled by crank splash, which is the oil flung off the crankshaft. You're better off upping the idle rpm to 750+ and using the stock pump, then using the high volumn pumps and the stock idle rpm of 550/600.
If you go through Re-Igniteds comments on the HV pumps, even he admits it's not a fix for the lifter issues.
Spend another 20 minutes and watch both these video's and you'll know more about the hemi's oiling system then you did this morning, and you'll start to see why a HV pump isn't a fix
