Seems like the most popular muffler upgrade on the web is the mufflex for our trucks and if i get one i am leaning towards the 18in. However, most of you guys that run the mufflex all have the dual tip exhaust out of the bumper so it makes it easy to keep everything stock. I have have an outdoorsman with the single exhaust and would want to have a turn down under the bed. Since I don't want to run out to the stock exhaust tip would it be worth it to buy the do it yourself mufflex and just get a turn down for around $300 or just by a magniflow for a lot cheaper and just have somebody weld it on. I figure I can get a magniflow set up for around $100. What are you guys thoughts?

If you're going a custom route just buying the Magnaflow muffler would end up cheaper. Let us know if we can help there.

Have it welded on! MUCH MUCH cheaper!!! Keep in mind, turning it down that close to the cab could lead to some major drone.

Chewy speaks the truth in the drone department. If you can have them extend the intermediate pipe to put the muffler/tip further back under the bed that will help but you may still get drone.

drone is something i want to avoid but I hate having exhaust tips show, as it is right now I cut off my tail pipe above the axle before the resonator just because I don't like the look. I might end up going with a more mild muffler if an 18'' is going to make to much drone.

I really don't care where it dumps exhaust I just don't want the tip to show

Moving it away from the cab will help. The larger muffler will help with drone but it will also mellow the sound at the same time.

I would advise that you run a Magnaflow 18" with enough tail pipe to get over the axle and aim the gasses away from your spare tire.

You could accomplish this with a piece of 3" pipe, a 45° and a large 90° bend.
Do it all yourself. You could weld it all together sans the connection to the truck.
Use a band clamp up there and you'll be golden.

On my last truck, I had a flowmaster super 10 dumped right at the cab and that thing sucked with drone, I was in the same boat as you, didn't want tips at the time so I ran it to go above my axle and had a slight turn down over the axle. Made drone 100x better but still had a bit. Then eventually I ran duals,

If I were you, I'd run the similar set up, have it go over the axle, but where it starts to turn back down around the axle just have it cut off there.

On my TRX, I have the 18" Magnaflow with it dumped just after the rear axle. Not much drone really..... and it shounds great.

The muffler was about $91 I think.... the install was about $75.

I like that clean look also from the back.

Pic and a vid.....

Depends on your area. Call around for install prices prior to making your decision. I bought a 22" Magnaflow at a very good discounted price ($75 shipped). The local shop wanted $250 to weld it in! I told them they were crazy, and I would return it and buy Mufflex before that would happen. They then agreed to do it for $170 -- which is the shop/book labor rate they get for replacing the muffler on our trucks. I still thought it was crazy, but did it. I should have shopped around. I'm sure I could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere. They did a nice job at least (small SS piece included)

170 bucks is a NUTS price, but labor is costing more and more and do you want it done cheap, or right? It's hard to get both!

Normal shop rate around here to weld a muffler on is about $80-$100. If they have to bend or add any pipe, then it usually goes up to about $150.

OP, for your application, I would just get the muffler and have a shop weld it in. Muffler will run right at $100 plus about $100 for labor...this will save you about $100 over the Mufflex kit. If you were keeping the stock tailpipe, then I would have recommended the Mufflex instead for the ease of install.
