New to the forum here as I just picked up a new (to me) 13' Ram 1500. 5.7 Hemi with a 3.92 rear end. So far I'm loving the truck, but looking at upgrading the tires on it. Current Wrangler SRAs are like running slicks on anything but dry pavement. I live in the Chicago area so wet/snow/ice traction is very important. Come fall it'll see some off-road mud and 2-tracks for hunting, but still want good road manners. I'll tow a 20' boat a couple times a year is all so I don't think I need anything more than a standard passenger load tire. I'll be getting them at Discount Tire and have narrowed it down to 3.

-Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrain ATs - $220/tire
-Falken AT3s - $200/tire
-Cooper AT3 4S - $200/tire

I'm torn on all 3. I like the looks and more aggressive tread of the Goodyear, the Falkens seem to be loved on here, and the Coopers seem to be getting great reviews and have the best mileage warranty. Are the Wranglers worth the extra $80/set over the others? Are the Falkens the right in between tire, or go with the Coopers that won SEMA?

TIA

I run Nitto Terra Grappler G2's (275/60R20 factory size). XL rated, 65k mileage rated, higher load rating than Goodyear SRA's.

The Nitto's did well in the snow this year and I am happy with that.

I’ve got the same truck you do but mine has a 4” Rough Country lift and I’m riding on 35x12.5x17 BF Goodrich AT KO2 that I’ve never had a problem with on or off road and they’re E Load Range and I believe they’re 10 ply tires so towing and of road should be no problem. I also live just outside of Chicago and had them in the snow and rain with no problem. e8f953145470e80065d4ac328246e05a.jpg

Just installed a set of LT285/70/17E Nexen Roadian AT ra8s. So far they ride smooth, are super quiet and look good. Paid $600 for tires and install. (This is with my discount) without it would have been around $700 from Walmart.com and installation at the store. (Including road hazard)
The aforementioned BFs and Nittos are also solid choices. I originally wanted the Ridge Grapplers and was also looking at the Falken Wildpeaks but couldn't pass up the price on the Nexens. Plus I found a website reviewing various LT tires and they rated highest (8 out of 10) for wet traction.

Nice looking truck. I looked at the BFGs, and they're just expensive. I was hoping to get a tire that would perform as well (or better) without the price tag. In the factory size the BFGs are not E load and $241/tire. Love the look of them though!

If I were gonna do Nittos, it would probably be the Ridge Grapplers. From the research I've done the 3 tires I listed are better in the winter, although the Nittos have the "3-Peaks" rating as well.

I'll have to look at that brand. I haven't heard of it before, but if they a re a good tire its a good deal for sure.

Couple other reasons I chose the Terra Grappler G2's, they are only one pound heavier than the Goodyears so I was not increasing rotational mass by much more than one pound for a better tire. Not decreasing my gas mileage drastically for an AT tire, or any additional wear and tear on the suspension components and braking.

I know the Ridge Grapplers have the XL version and are only about 7lbs. heavier but they don't have a posted mileage warranty. Not saying there is anything bad with that, I know a few people that have the Ridge Grapplers and say they have a great tread life.

My next tire might be a General HTS60....who knows. :)

Oh yeah, I forgot that the Nexens also have a 50k mileage warranty. Very important in my opinion.

I have the Cooper ATS 4S. I bought them in November. They have been outstanding in the snow and rain, and they make absolutely NO more noise than the factory Goodyears I replaced.

Nitto ridge grapplers are just m+s not 3peak. They are good tires, but not great snow tires.15551145350067357661780073801391.jpg

I'm seeing better tread life on the newer bfg at tires since they changed the tread composition and they are about the best at in the snow I've tried. I run dedicated snows in the winter so I prefer something more aggressive for the muddy resource roads I drive in spring and fall so I have the ridge grapplers on most of the year.

Have you tried any of the 3 I listed for comparison to the BFGs?

The more I read on these the more I lean their way. Sounds like a great tire, I just with they had a more aggressive "look" but if they perform that good for the price... they might just be the ticket.

I know a few guys running the coopers and they seem like solid tires and their trucks ride fine. I've been mostly bfg, toyo and nitto. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. Also see a lot of goodyear duratracs and are also a decent tire. Are the ultraterrains similar?

+1 on the KO2’s, they’re great in the snow.

I’ve got the Ridge Grapplers now and before them I had the BFG KO2’s. The KO2’s are much better in the snow. I compared price between the two and they ran about the same. The Ridge Grapplers aren’t 3-peak rated.

I put Cooper Discoverer ATPs on the rear of my 2wd for winter use and they are amazing on snow and ice. They are very quiet and smooth as the SRAs and with 4k on them almost no wear. I have put the original SRAs back on for the summer. They don't look aggressive but they have the traction.

Managed to get Discount Tire to price match an Amazon special on Falken AT3w's ($160/tire) when installing a set of rims off a Longhorn... Stock size.

2000 miles and they seem to have great traction especially in a huge downpour the other day on the interstate heading to work. The original SRA'S would have been all over the road/hydroplaning.

My understanding is that the Ultraterrain are a very close exclusive version of the Duratracs that Goodyear makes for Discount Tire. They are 3 peak rated and start with 16/32 instead of the 13 that most the other ATs have. Its a pretty new tire though.

No brainer at that price. Had them in any snow?
