So I was lucky enough in my current job to have an almost new 2017, Express which I have already done a few upgrades on, but I may be switching jobs soon so will be looking at a new truck.

Problem is, my current job my whole truck is free it is a company truck that I will hand back if I leave, my new job is only going to pay mileage, so between either a 4th generation or 2019 classic I was wondering about the Eco Diesel, and looking for opinions on anyone that has one on pros/cons of the diesel, and actual mileage that people are getting.

I owned a 2016 Ecodiesel Longhorn 4x4 and 3.55 gears. In town, I never got below 22 mpg, on the hwy at 69-70 mph, I got 31 mpg. Hand calculated.

Went back to an HD. It was a really nice truck, but I had a few 1st year concerns, and therefore traded it out. Now that some improvements have been made, I'm sure it's a great motor!

Also, it was a 2014, not a 16 that my fat thumbs typed above.

I used to own a 2013 hemi, granted it was lifted 6” and had 35” mud tires on it, but at one point I was working where I had a 100 mile round trip commute to work. I was filling up every 2-3 days.

Fast forward to now, I have a 2017 ecodiesel. I did a similar 100 mile commute for 6 months and was only filling up once a week. That alone was super nice. If you’re going to do a lot of city driving, short distance trips, the ecodiesel is not for you unless you plan to tune and delete. A lot of people are really liking the 3.6L pentastar because it gets comparatively good mpgs but you don’t have to worry about the emissions systems if you don’t do a lot of highway driving

I would expect a 3017 to be an aircar with a very efficient engine. Lol

Ricci, congrats on the job. I would expect a new ecodiesel to be a good reliable truck and will certainly get some decent mpg. There is a bit of a debate as to if it actually saves dollars between the cost of the diesel upgrade, maintenance and def fluid. The only advice I have is to make sure the dealer has a diesel mechanic certified on the ecodiesel. My opinion is, some folk do not not have this at their dealer and run into repair issues that shouldn't be issues at all. That being said, don't overlook the Pentastar engine and test drive one. Then decide.

Depending on winter/summer I usually get 20-22 city and 26-28(I don't drive like a grandpa get better numbers)highway with mine CCLB 3.92 4x4. Even with a 3500 lbs boat behind it, I'm still at 20 mpg or with an 8K lbs enclosed trailer behind it 15 mpg. I love mine.

With everyone telling me how expensive DEF is I've considered buying a PriuS (yeah the SRT8 version). The last time I filled the DEF tank, I calculated it at just over 1200 miles to the gallon @ $2.80/gallon at the local truck stop.

To all, thanks or the comments, I've been looking online and see a pretty nice 2017, crew cab, eco diesel, 9,000 miles listing at $34,900.

Could get in a similar age, mileage Hemi engine but higher trim for same price, or drop to another express and save about 8,000....had the express love it but always figured if or when I buy my own truck I would upgrade the trim level.

Also some great deals on 2019, quad cab big horn for about $36,000, 10K off sticker.

One last question on diesel, I noticed when looking at Mopar warranty that they didn't seem to offer lifetime maxcare for the diesel??? I tried quoting online at Ziegler for the 2017 I was looking at.

Diesels are never included in lifetime plans. Why not go hemi, if you want the peace of mind with the lifetime and a higher trim level. Just in the dealers getting recalls done last saturday and talking with the service manager, he said getting the turbo off of the 3.0l diesel is such a PIA that FCA said to unbolt and remove the cab to get to it which they did. Wonder what THAT would cost without a warranty?

That’s just standard practice depending upon the vehicle. Ford 6.0L powerstrokes are only able to be worked on with the cab lifted off the frame. I’m sure there’s stuff on the hemi that’s not accessible without unmounting the cab from the frame.

I'm actually thinking higher trim, Hemi now, as I will likely put 150 -200K on this thing, and for the 2,900 for a lifetime warranty only available on gas, that is better piece of mind.

A good question would be, can you add mods to a truck with a lifetime warranty though? Or would that void it just the same

Some mods no problem others bad. 2" lift ok, custom tune bad for warranty. If he mods the headlights then don't expect FCA to fix them but they won't cause a bad cam so if engine goes, they fix that.
Now THIS might be a problem with extended warranty... But a lot of fun.....
