Hey guys, I know there are alot of guys on the fence like I was on this subject so I wanted to post my results so that maybe it will help someone who had the same questions I did.

I have a 2011 ram 1500 sport,4x4,5.7,quad cab. The factory exhaust was to quite. I wanted more "rumble" but without making the neighbors angry when I start it up late/early and without it sounding like an all out hotrod and with minimal in cab noise/drone. I was caught between a 14" and 18" magnaflow mufflex/boeschbuilt kit . I finally decided on the 18".

After giving it more thought I decided I would look into sourcing out the muffler and having a shop install Vs buying the kit (an easy $300.00 all said and done and you have to do the work).

I ended up ordering a magnaflow 12278 18" muffler single 3" in dual 2 1/4" out. I got it from advanceautoparts.com originally 120.99 and used promo code TRT41 which knocked $40 right off the top of the price. bringing the total to $80.99 . I then used a $5.00 rewards I had and got it for $75.99 ($0.99 to the good to receive free shipping!). Plus sales tax it cost me $80.55 to the door.

I then took it to a local exhaust shop who quoted me $100 for the install. I dropped the truck off and an hour later they called and told me it was done. He then said it went so smooth and sounded so good that he only was going to charge me $80.00 for the install (included 2 extension pipes, stainless hangers and stainless clamps). He welded the extension pipes to the muffler and clamped the ends (like factory) so I could reinstall my factory muffler if I ever decided too. All said and done it cost me $160.55 and I didn't have to get dirty!. I am mentioning all of this so you guys out there looking at the kits know you have other options and those options might save you a bundle of cash AND you don't have to do the work yourself lol.

I fired the truck up and YES....PERFECT!. Exactly the sound I was looking for!. I nice rumble at idle...yet mellow enough that it wont offend people. But when you get on the throttle she GROWLS!. At cruising speed she quiets back down again. ZERO drone at any speeds (not sure if it is because I have a quad cab or not?). MDS doesn't sound any different than it did with the stock exhaust I don't think. And the best part.....I saved easily a good $140 VS. buying a premade kit that is basically exactly the same as what I have now!.

I crawled under the truck and painted the welds and clamps and piping with high temp black paint just for ***** and giggles.

I am very impressed. Perfect sound. Really compliments the hemi. I will try to take a clip of the exhaust soon and post it for you guys but just like ever youtube video I watched before buying....its really hard to tell the true sound without hearing it in person. But if you are on the fence...do not hesitate to go with the 18" maggy!.

hope this helps someone else out there that may be in the same boat I was.

Could have saved even more and went with the knockoff magnaflow, the jones 2278 muffler. That's what I have in the 18 inch and I agree that it's a great sound. Not too much but enough. Didn't even realize it has almost the same part number as the magnaflow.

My only advice is to replace those clamps with some solid band clamps like what Mufflex includes in their kit. The clamps your shop used will actually indent the exhaust pipe making it almost impossible to remove down the road. May save you some headache if you ever decide to go back to stock.

I just had one installed the other day, too. Welded in by a local shop... took him about 20-30 minutes. All in, I have about $130 invested. I agree about the sound... it's perfect! Puts a smile on my face every time I hear it!

Thanks guys.

And thanks for chiming in with ANOTHER option if someone was to go with the knockoff muffler.....yet another cheaper alternative if someone is on a budget.

And also, I agree about the clamps....I have ran into headache removing them on vehicles in the past...but normally you run into that issue when people are connecting 2 pieces of pipe that are ill fitting together and/or over tightened the clamps. Neither of which was done on my setup so "should" have no issue if I ever need to remove it for whatever reason. But I do agree band clamps are the way to go. Had I been given the option between the 2 styles of clamps I would have chose the band clamps.

Also, I wanted to mention. If your looking for a local shop to do the work. Make sure you call a few places and go with a shop that has been in business for awhile. Just for the heck of it I called one shop in town that has only been around for about 3 years and asked for a quote on what I needed done. First they tried telling me it was going to be $1200.00. When I finished laughing and explained to them exactly what I wanted done and what other shops in town were quoting they said " sounds like you need alot of custom work done,we suggest you take it to another shop". So,just because you find an "exhaust shop"....does not always mean they are knowledgeable/capable. lol.

In the end the place that has been in town for decades had the best price, knew exactly what I wanted, explained to me what most guys with trucks of my years get/like,and knew all the pipe diameters/materials used from the factory off the top of his head. Pays to do some homework.

I have the exact same setup, it sounds great with out being "too much" and the price is perfect...

So to revisit this, had the new muffler put on today along with some 5 inch tips.

Sound is soooo much deeper than stock and what it really should have been from factory.

I'll report back on any issues with drone or MDS but none so far.

I still love mine. I have noticed the only time I hear MDS kick in really is if I am going about 25 mph and barely have my foot on the throttle. Then my truck sounds like it is farting through the exhaust lol. Otherwise I have not noticed any drone or anything.

I do have a tiny exhaust leak I need to get taken care of, on a cold start you can hear a slight "pft pft pft" back where I had the muffler put on somewhere.

I also notice my gas mileage took a big hit. I probably lost 2 miles to the gallon. Not fault of the exhausts. Just that my foot seems to have got heavier since the new exhaust lol.

I even personally asked one of my neighbors if they could hear my exhaust and if it bugged them at all and they said that it wasn't loud enough that they could hear a peep from inside their house.

I am still loving it. Hope the follow up helps anyone on the fence.
