New Noise...

A month or so ago I started my truck up and ran back inside to grab something I forgot. When I came out I hear this new noise, almost like a knock. Usually I get in my truck, start it, let it idle for a minute or so and then drive away so it may have been doing it longer than a month. I know what a rod knock sounds like but this doesn't quite sound like that to me.

I've been pretty busy with work lately and I have a company vehicle so I haven't driven my truck for a good week. I decided to take a video of it today to see what you guys thought, and for a possible dealer visit.

I started recording just as I started the truck and it seems pretty quiet until about 1:13 where its pretty obvious.

At around 2:04 I tap the gas slightly and you can here it rattle a bit. If I held the RPMs slightly above idle it seemed to quiet up (2:18). At 2:48 is when I cut to it fully warmed up and all you hear is the cooling fan unfortunately and Hemi Tick but the noise is gone.

My main concern is I'm taking my family on a 1200+ mile trip in a week and a half so I obviously don't want my truck to break down. Is this worth a dealer visit? My dealer isn't the greatest but they're the only one at all close to me. For example, I brought my truck in 3 times for the Hemi Tick (sounds totally different than this you can hear it in the later part of the video) in the past. First they tried to tell me it was because I changed my own oil. They quickly changed their tune when they saw my reciepts for the correct oil and filters. Then the told me that time and two other times its "normal Hemi engine sounds".

Also getting my truck to the dealer is a huge pain in the a** so I figured I'd see what you guys thought first.

I can only say My 5.7L does not sound like that!

I'm not even going to begin to speculate what the sound is...

You might listen to Burlas Advice and think about switching to Redline 5W-20 or 5W-30 on you next oil change... I personally would not wait until it begins to get worse-->It might not but I {Myself} would not take that chance...

Read somewhere on here a while back that these 4th gen hemi's like to talk a lot when they haven't been started up in a while. I had a good tick going on mine after leaving it sitting for 2 weeks. It lasted for a couple minutes even after I turned it off/on again. Drive down the block and I haven't heard it since.

Sorry forgot to mention that I noticed it while I was running 5w20 PYB (the one I did the oil sample on). I switched to Redline 5w20 and it still was the same. It killed me but for warranty purposes I switched back to 5w20 PYB and a Mopar filter so they can't argue I used an "improper oil".

Yeah it's definitely making me a little nervous...

It lasted for a couple minutes even after I turned it off/on again. Drive down the block and I haven't heard it since.

I have to drive it today so I'll see what it sounds like after only sitting for 24 hours...

Other than an occasional lifter going south, the 5.7 has proven to be very resilient.

Unfortunately, there's not really enough 'noise' in the you-tube vid to make a conclusive diagnosis at this time.

Well I drove it tonight and its just as loud as yesterday after sitting for a week.

What concerns me is that this is relatively new...

It might be exhaust bolts or something that can't be fixed by a different oil. Just curious, what filter did you have on prior to current mopar?

I had the Royal Purple 10-48. Before that it was the same Mopar. This started before I changed to Redline/RP 10-48.

Yeah I was thinking exhaust bolts but all the videos I've seen on those is more of a ticking noise. This is more of a faint knock. Almost like piston slap...

You had a lot of oil changes and the noise sounds the same, so either it is something really rubbing internally, or probably exhaust or injectors. I'm kinda thinking it isn't lifter tick and my money is still on exhaust or injectors, leaning towards exhaust.

My 2014 clatters just the same on cold startups, TONS of videos of the same clatter here and on YouTube, I'm not to concerned.

And I have checked my manifold bolts and all are well.... Here's a thread about the clattering, however, they are talking about the 6.4 hemi, people are mentioning everything in the thread and YouTube from normal noise to new engines, so take it as you will, I'm still not concerned, I have plenty of warranty left, the truck is running amazing and the sound goes away pretty quickly.

Yes it completely goes away by the time the truck gets to full operating temp

Yes sir.

And it started out of nowhere.

Quiet one day and then started the truck and obnoxious ticking sound. Not the Hemi tick.

It's actually a very common PROBLEM unfortunately. But simple fix.

Mine was driver side, by cylinder 8 if I remember.

Hopefully this is your problem as it is an easy fix. Be sure to post the outcome for others in the future.
