Hey guys - I have a new 2018 1500 Bighorn and the climate control fan seems to be really weak. The heat here (Denver) has been in the low 90s lately and the fan is barely able to keep up. I have it on max AC, the temperature set to LO, and the fan turned up to the highest setting and eventually the truck cools down but I can never make it comfortable. The air coming out of the vents is cold but it just doesn't come out fast enough.

I searched the forums but didn't see many people having issues on new trucks. So my question is: are the fans just weak in general? Or should I be expecting better performance?

I am planning on taking it in next week but I wanted to make sure that I'm not crazy. Surely some of you who live in hotter parts of the states would notice if your A/C was sub-par?

Thanks!

You can get a temp probe and stick it in your vent, then stick it in your other car vents and compare.

The #'s maybe help determine if your a/c system has a issue already?

Also the fan power is not the greatest, but never really had a complaint about cooling the interior down even in 110 degrees from the tracks i frequent.

Pop out your glove box. Look for anything that is blocking the fan intake. Not Rams but my daughter and son in law both keep a lot of crap in thier glove boxes and things get sucked into the ac intake.

Check you're cabin air filter. The first time I changed mine it was only 8 months old and I couldn't believe all the crap that was in it. I usually change mine once a year.

Do the 2018's come with one, or do you have to add it ????

Alright, checked the cabin air filter and it looks clean. Also, nothing seems to be blocking the air intake from what I can see behind the glove box. I only have 100 miles on it so I wouldn't have expected it to be dirty but who knows. It is difficult to quantify how weak the air flow is. I can barely feel the air move if it is on high and pointed right at me if I am sitting back in the seat. If I'm not riding with anyone I usually close the passenger vents and that helps.

Just another note, it blows just the same whether I have the AC or the heat on. The temperature coming right out of the vents is cold, it just seems weak and I have to drive around with it on full blast on the lowest temperature setting to keep it a decent temperature.

TRCM, my 2018 comes with a cabin air filter. Looks like at least the '17s come with one as well based on the video looked at to check the filter.

which climate controls do you have, the 4 speed fan or the 7 speed fan?

the 4 speed fan is weak, that's what I have in my 16 wagon

I have a 7 speed fan. I added the cabin filter to my truck as it didn’t come with it. I end up taking the filter out during the summer. After the pollen falls (at least the heavy pollen season) I take it out and put it back in the fall.
I feel that the air flow is severely decreased with the filter. When it’s hot I like to have the AC blow from the dash vents. I kept the filter in place the first summer I put the filter in and I had to keep the fan on HI to keep it comfortable. Without the filter in place I can reduce the fan speed sometimes all the way down to low to stay comfortable.

I have the 7 speed.. That's a bummer if the fan speed just isn't great. I think I'm still going to have the dealer check it out. If they can't do anything then I'll just run it without the air filter in the summer.

I would definitely take it to the dealer that doesn’t sound normal. I checked my AC and the fan blows hard and cold on my new 2018 sport. I live in high a high temp area as well (Nevada) so even on hot days it’s keeping the truck nice and cool.

Sorry to hear that you’re having issues, that’s never fun on a new purchase. Good luck!

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm definitely taking it in this week...

And I did make sure I had the max AC setting on. Not much difference.

My 2017 blows pretty good too, no issues hot or cold.

My 18 Sport blows hard. and has no problem getting cold really quick.

If you have all the vents OPEN including the back seat ones, then obviously, the volume of air in each vent will seem like its less.

I have an '18 Limited, I agree with Tjames, take it in, you should have good air flow. Mine comes out very quickly on remote start when the outside temps are up. I also run it on Auto and keep the cabin temps around 72-73 degrees. So the fan will speed up or slow down depending on the cabin temp.

Mine is at the dealer for the recall and I mentioned this as well. Manager said from 15-18 they have had this problem in many vehicles and its never really noticed until summer hits. He said his 18 also doesnt feel like it blows hard enough *insert joke here* and that they just have a weak motor. I told him it shouldnt feel that way and he said he will look into it but hes not sure what they can do. Good luck.

My 2018 has the same issue,
600 miles .
Had it less than a month.
First time I felt it.
I had a 2016 that I traded in and it had very high flow .
That’s why I knew right away there was an issue.

Well I hope your dealership will do something for you. I have an appointment on the 5th, so I will let you all know how that turns out. It definitely has a hard time keeping up with the 90 degree heat
