I had my radiator replaced due to an accident and the day after the rad was replaced, the antifreeze reservoir was bone dry. I took it back to the shop and they filled it up. Come 200 kms later I go and check it again and there is hardly any in it. I’ve read about bad head gaskets and my truck has no symptoms, other than the coolant, that points to the head gaskets. What could be going on? Truck is a 2015 1500 5.7 with 44k kms on it. Pic is of some hoses that don’t look right to me. Looks like the smaller ends were pulled off or have come loose. I know nothing about engines and stuff so looking for ideas of what’s going on. 88c4e9f75013de2afb9364490ca2d643.jpg

Check the overflow hose connection just under the rad cap. Some rads have 2 nipples that the overflow hose will fit,but one is a blind hole, the other one is the actual connection. It's not uncommon after a rad replacement for the hose to be hooked up to the wrong nipple.

It’s hooked up to the top nipple I can see another nipple a bit further down.

I would check it every day for a bit to see if it still goes down. BUT my guess and I am no gear head I pay a mechanic to work on mine as well lol It may be possible they did not get at the air out of the cooling system, and it finally migrated out which lowered your coolant ? Just a guess and will see what the Gear Heads have to say soon :)

Don’t know much about this, but my thought is they did not do a good job bleeding all the air out of the coolant system. As the system circulates, the air works its way out and fluid is pulled in.

It's quite possible they didn't bleed it well as mentioned. If you see the overflow go bone dry again wait until cool, top off the radiator directly, then hit the overflow bottle. If it keeps going down by a lot after that point then you probably have a leak somewhere.

Have them top it off and run a quick pressure test. A couple psi will determine if it's a leak. If not top it off and let it run with the cap off wait till it reaches operating temperature top it off again once the air works out. (It may push fluid back out while the air is working out also) top it back off put the cap back on and fill the overflow. Should be good to go

Great input thanks guys. I was asking some of the so called Facebook mechanics and they are like yup your head gaskets are blown the motor is done and I was like whoa. If the shop didn’t vacuum fill the radiator would it cause the air pockets?

Refills after a full drain leaves air pockets that require bleeding. Vacuum fill speeds this up and minimizes air pockets but does not eliminate them. Bleeding is required. My guess is that the shop did it is a basic thing in all systems however they may have rushed it and left air trapped causing the overflow to drain helping fill it but not completely curing or topping it off

It was a body shop that repairs dents and **** and they have some in house mechanic. Why wouldn’t they stick to body work and source out the mechanic side of things. That’s probably why my Ac doesn’t work either, they said they recharged it but most likely dropped the ball on that too.
