Hey everyone. I just bought a used 98 1500 with a 5.2l has 105,000 miles. Runs good idles smooth. But on highway it seems to top out at 60 mph. Like it wants to shift into a higher gear. But cant. Im sure someone has experienced this before. any feedback would help before i take it into the shop

Check the plenum, look down the throttle body and see if there's any oil in it. You also have the factory death flash so that'll kill some power. But there shouldn't be any reason to be lacking power or speed. Maybe your cat is clogged..anything seem wrong with the trans?

Trans seems fine. I will be changing the exhaust next week. Cat included. Hope that solves it

So today the engine light comes on. Three codes. All cylinder missfires. I take truck to a nearby mr tire. Tell me the trans is shot. I have no 2nd or 3rd gear. But its ********. It shifts fine. Just weak power. I take it to my friends exhaust shop and put on a new cat. So far so good. Man it feels like a new motor. Hope it lasts. Thanks for the input

That's why you don't listen to a tire shop....they're a tire shop for a reason. :roflsquared:

Good to hear it's doing good now.

Now go read the Plenum thread in this forum and fix the root cause of the cat failure.

While we are talking about cats, anyone recommend any? I don't really like universal because I don't want anymore joints in the exhaust system

I just rolled over 88,000 miles and still have stock cat and im sure its somewhat pluged.

Its just a universal weld joint. I plan on full exhaust soon. But this was an emergency job. The mr tire joint was Wayyy off the hook on thier diognostic. My buddy does custom exhaust and says although any stock fit is best, unless other mods are present, its not much a diff other than a cool sound. And im spesking of full exhaust

Just get a universal replacement like I did. lol The untrained eye wouldn't be able to tell it's been off. :roflsquared:

Hey DD, did you remove the transfercase/trans support bracket that basicslly covers the cat to get to the cat? Also when you remove the cat, did you use the exhaust support brackets or just let the system hang..? Thats really the only reason I was looking into a direct fit to be able to have the exhaust supported and not hitting the body every time I hit a bump (I've learned from experience because I did that before on a Tacoma lol and it was so damn annoying lol)
