My change oil light came on for the first time ever. I run synthetic and change it every 5000 miles. This oil has only 3200 miles on it so what gives? Does the electronics sense it needs changed and I should change it or wait my regular mileage duration?

I believe the EVIC bases it off on your driving and based on if it needs to be done. I am not sure if you should change it or not seems that you should be able to get a little more life.

That's odd, but I would listen to the truck and change it, then try to make it 5,000 from that point for your next change.
Cheap insurance :)

the computer takes a lot of variables into consideration, it is also logged into memory. I use Amoil that's rated at 10,000 miles but when my oil change light comes on I change it... just change the oil, safer for your engine and warranty

Yep, it comes on at a certain mileage... I just reset it and change it when I need to. I keep the mileage so I know.

Then yours isn't working right, my 2011 came on at different millage intervals depending on driving style and time of year (ambient temps), that is also true of my wife's 300 SRT so I think I'd have a dealer look at your computer. It also says in the manual that driving style and ambient temps will effect oil change interval...

Beyond a temperature and psi sensor, are there any actual sensors in the lubricating system? Differential pressure across the filter?

mine came on at 3500 miles. i wasnt planning on changing the oil until 5000 miles, but i said screw it and went ahead and changed it, expecting fairly clean oil to come out. surprisingly enough, the oil was pretty dirty. now im curious to see when the light is going to come on again.

To the OP - maybe the person who did the previous oil change didn't reset the light. It might be thinking it's been a lot more miles than you've actually run. I've had it happen at oil changes from the dealer and you'd think they would know better.

The factory oil change light interval is set for a standard dino oil user.
It does not in anyway monitor oil quality or additive count.

It may or may not check based off some set of variables, I've been to lazy to monitor it.
Mine seems to go off around 3500 miles. Perhaps next time I'll reset Trip B odo and see.

Bottom line, with a quality synthetic and filter, there is no reason to follow the light.

I think that I have read some where, it monitors different driving conditions like time of idling, hi revs... Not sure what else it could monitor.
Myself, I would wait for the regular intervals.
Just check the oil and make sure it is in the safe zone.

BINGO! It also monitors oil temp since as we all know oil breaks down when it gets hot... For those whom seem to think that it's set at a certain mileage you obviously don't understand how the computer works in our pickups or the data that it records.
