Oil Filter Thread

I was looking at Mobil1 oil filters today. It was printed in small print on the side of the box 99% at 30 microns. Isn't 20 microns the standard for an automotive filter?

Iirc, royal purple filter is rated at 99% at 25 microns. Guessing that 20 microns is not the standard.

FYI - Check your local Pep Boys for the RP filter. I picked up 2 of the -820 when they were on sale, for about 11 each. They also have the standard size (-48 IIRC).

Amsoil oil filter part numbers for Hemis:

Small (stock size)- EA15k50, uses 76mm wrench (Good for up to 15k miles according to Amsoil)

Large (RP 20-820 size)- EAO11, uses 93mm wrench (Good for up to 25k miles according to Amsoil)

Both are rated 98.7% efficient @20 microns.

Hey I just cut open a Royal Purple filter today after 24 months in use, still like new. I built up to this, last time I tried 14 months. They don't degrade, flow faster and catch more contamination then paper, case closed. I am not recommending 24 month intervals for filters, I was just curious so I tested it. I likely will bring down that interval.

The one thing that is odd, is how small the filter is compared to the entire canister. But whatever on that, I found my filter. Hope this has helped.

Has anyone ever compared the two as far as flow rate? Just looking at it it would appear that the RP would have a better flow rate. ( more inlet holes)

Royal Purple: They knew the flow rate but refused to tell me, I even wrote certified letters to the corporate office and CEO. I got stone walled.

Amsoil: Had no idea.

Fram: Could only guarantee industry minimum of 3 gallons per minute.

Mobil1 synthetic blend: 18 gallons per minute.

Wix xp: no information yet.

Got a certified letter sent to Champion Labs to get the flow rate of all oil filters they make private and public. No response yet.

I asked the flow rate for the entire brand line for the 5.7 Hemi. Only thing the the rep said was Fram could only "Guarantee" the minimum industry standard of 3 gallons per minute. I'm not ever sure that is the industry minimum but that is what he said. Obviously the full synthetic filter media will flow better than the paper but no confirmed numbers.

Just curious. What are you hoping to accomplish by knowing these flow rates? It won't change what your oil pump can produce and I can guarantee you any decent filter made for it will flow more than your pump is capable of. A more important figure to know would be at what pressure the relief valve cracks at. That will tell you at what pressure (and above) your oil is not being filtered.
