2017 5.7L

~37,000 miles

~5,000-6,000 OCI

Redline 5w-30 w/ Wix XP filter

No failures.

Only ticks for about 2-3 seconds when I cold start and move the truck very short distances to blow off the driveway or move it to wash the truck, etc... And thats only when I start the truck for a second time. If the truck doesnt get a chance to heat up all the way, I get a tick on the second cold start.

Something to add, I turn off my MDS religiously since I bought the truck. I had about 25k on it when I got it.

A failure at only 11,000 miles is scary as hell to me! Did the dealership treat you right?

They took good care of me. However, I have lost a lot of confidence in the platform but I am also not super convinced the lifters actually failed, some bearings felt slightly tougher than others, maybe a little bit of uneven wear. The thing that boggles my mind is that the hard ticking on cold starts went away...

All I can say about oil type and cam/lifters is I kinda of doubt there is an argument at all for thin low anti wear/extreme pressure (aw/ep) additive oil being better then the opposite. I'd say the opposite does at least have an argument, but there simply wont be a lot of data to make serious conclusions. Clearly some oils kill ticks left behind with the low additive gf-5 20 weights, that part is a straight fact at this point.

Even after my complete lifter replacement there is still a slight tick (sounds like one lifter is louder than the others) I’m really interested to try redline for that moly content but I also don’t want to quiet a problem that will develop into a failure.

Current: 2019 Ram 1500 @ 24500 miles

Oil type: synthetic

Lifter failures: none

Abnormal tick: none

PREVIOUSLY OWNED: 2010 & 2014 Ram 1500s w/5.7

Traded at 107000 and 93000 miles

Average oil change was between 9300 10000 miles

Used semi-synthetic oil in 2010, and semi- and full synthetic in 2014. Used Mopar or Fram oil filters only.
