What does an open diff with traction control mean? Isn't that an oxymoron?

It's more of a redundancy, than an oxymoron.

I don't think anyone needs both. But then they add BLD, and stability control, and the fact that some of the transfer cases aren't true 4WD, and things get rather convoluted.

applies breaking to the slipping wheel
Traction control uses the abs sensors to sense which wheel is spinning and the abs module applies brake pressure to that wheel to even it out. A lsd differential is mechanical and uses friction disc in the rear

Traction Control uses the ABS braking system to force torque to the wheel that's not slipping. It's a widely used method on probably just about all new car nowadays. LSD can exhibit interesting handling characteristics when the conditions are slick. Traction Control is much more controllable especially when combined with the vehicle stability controls

whats fun to do with it on a wet day, leave traction control on and floor it. The rear passenger wheel will light off for a couple seconds then the traction control will slow that tire and send it to the driver side, and a few seconds later itll pull power to get it under control. Whats crazy is how well it works on dry. On dry my ram will barely spin a tire under full power, turn it off and itll light the tire forever.

Its really quite impressive how well it keeps you under control.
