I do not trade with Rock Auto unless I ABSOLUTELY have NO other choice. I've never heard of "CalorStat", I wonder who their parent company is. I recently bought a Murray radiator cap. On it was embossed "Motorad". $hit, man, I can't seem to get away from Motorad GARBAGE.

CalorStat is owned by Vernet. Some internet searching indicates that they make OEM parts for alot of European cars. Of course, if they are anything like the other manufacturers, then their OEM parts and their aftermarket lines are two entirely different things.

@EdGs I'm curious if you tested for head gasket failure?

Running hotter than normal after a failure with water pump or a fan issue could be a symptom of head gasket failure. I lost my water pump and heated my 2010 to about 3/4 on the guage and after that it consistently ran at 220-230 or above. After the fix it rarely goes above 190. Will see in the summer what temp it runs with the 100+ heat.

Going through the various steps to test, I found exhaust gas in the radiator and could start her up with the cap off and blow antifreeze out of the radiator by stepping on the gas.

After teardown I found previous owner had used head gasket sealant in the antifreeze rather than replacing thee gasket.
No, I have not. I have been under the weather a bit, and been short on time.

I had no indication of a gasket failure, no smoke at exhaust, etc.

I am going to crack the oil drain plug loose before I start to see if there's any coolant in the oil, and also planning to examine the coolant that I drain closely.

I have the parts here to change the rad and coolant, I just haven't been feeling my best after contracting the NC funk.

In the case of my head gasket, the only symptom initally, was running hot after water pump failure. Nothing showing in exhaust or oil. It was leaking between cylinder 1 and three and just a little to the water jacket from 3.

Did you find crud in there from the stop-leak?

Well, D-day on my radiator change.

Loosened the oil drain plug, and.......

No coolant in the oil, THANK GOD!

My son has to replace brake pads on his wife's Kia Sportage, so have to wait a little to start the rad swap.

Ok, rad is out. Coolant so far looks ok.

Lost about 8-10 oz. on floor.
Thermostat was stuck in housing. In it's defense, it was the original stat, I never changed it when I changed coolant 90k miles ago.

I'm gonna sacrifice it, and reinstall without the guts, and shoot a couple gallons of distilled water into the upper hose and see what comes out the lower hose.

Stay tuned.....

I have an OE stat that I bought when I did my last change, also bought a new Gates 203° that should be in the mailbox, gonna test those first, and get some dinner.

Might have to finish the job tomorrow.

I ordered two of the 192° CalorStat thermostats that RockAuto started carrying.. I'm hoping for something decent quality since, apparently, OEM is now Motorad.

Tried testing the Gates stat, and couldnt get it to open, I'm sure the temp dropped fast enough it didn't get to 203°.

Didn't really want to drop it in the boiling water on the stove, gonna use the OE stat I got for last time.

I don't understand.

You tested it, idling in the truck?

I just got having over heating issues on my Ram. Initially it was a bad water pump. After a pressure test, they found a leak on the outer edge of the head gasket leaking onto the block and burning off.

No, boiling water on the stove. If I pour boiling water over it, it doesn't open, I assume because the temp drops below 195° before the body of the stat gets to 203°. I didn't drop it in the pot of boiling water and let it sit to see if it opens.

Still might try again later.

I'm only at the halfway mark on the repair so far.

Maybe put it in the boiling water. That will ensure it is heated to at least the boiling point for your elevation. Or use a cooking thermometer and heat it to say 195, and put it in. For the stovetop test I've always put it in the water.

The gates stat I put in recently opened in 195 degree water.

I like to put the thermostat into the pot with bbq grill tongs while the water is hot, but well before boiling.

I like to see what temp it starts to open, what temp it is fully open at, then turn off the heat and see what temp it closes at.

With my folding digital thermometer, i leave it half folded and i can get the water temp without burning myself with steam.

Yeah, I'm sure I just wasn't quite right with my process. Gonna give it another shot.

I was FORCED to buy aftermarket t-stats during our "Scam-demic". C-19, dontcha know?! ;)
Anyhoo, EVERY brand of available to me aftermarket t-stats were made by MotoRad. So, in one of my customer's 2014 Chevy Silverado LTZ, 4WD, with a 5.3 GDI, DOD engine, I did a 100,000 mile flush, replaced hoses, and a MotoRad t-stat. The MotoRad seems to be working fine. I DID go ahead and order on back order status a GM AC/Delco unit, which arrived months later. It's on my inventory shelf, just in case. That Delco cost me most of a hundred dollars... uh, yeah, sure! Crazy, eh?

"And the beat goes on, da da da da da!"

My OE tstat did open on the stove, but it appeared to be at above 203° before it did.

The Gates stat didn't seem to open the same to me, seemed to not open as much.

Once the 2 CalorStat thermostats ordered show up, I'll test them both and post up the results.

Granted, a sample size of 2 isn't very scientific, but since they are both the same model/temp, if they both work and are consistent with each other, I'll feel less nervous about using them.

The old OEM Mopar thermostats that are in both of my vehicles right now are stamped "203° 64mm USA". I'm very reluctant to replace them with Chinese garbage.
