Original hoses still look great.

Changed my coolant at ~100k, will be doing again with water pump and anything else I find this time around.

I only have about a gallon of coolant on hand, will need to get more Mopar stuff.

Serpentine belt on the list for a check/change if need be.

Tensioner is original, too. Gonna have to look that over.
If you don't have a set of these, they make working with the factory spring clamps easy Ed.

Yea, if those things cost 5x as much as they do, it would still be worth it.

Last weekend I did a coolant flush/replace on my Ram 5.7 and a coolant flush/replace and new oil pan gasket on my wife's Durango 5.7. Those hose clamp pliers should be in every toolbox!

BTW, putting a new oil pan gasket in a Durango Citadel 5.7 sucks pretty bad!

Is that just a gasket, or the windage tray, etc.?

Just the gasket on the Durango.

It has a plastic oil pan with the windage tray and oil pump pickup tube both being molded-in, integral parts of the oil pan.

I removed the fan and shroud, and removed the engine mount bolts, then used a cherry picker style engine hoist to lift the engine a couple inches.

I used a 4" wide nylon cargo strap looped around the harmonic balancer and up to the engine hoist to lift the engine.

with the engine up about 2", I was able to rotate the oil pan and fish it out the front from below.

Well, finally got into checking the Ram out after getting back home and getting over the NC funk that we all got from the kids and grandkids. (Influenza A it was).

Topped off the rad and put 15 psi on it, and :

Cracked rad it is, no weep at water pump, pretty amazed for 196k miles.

My 2002 S/T Blazer required removal of the engine for oil pan/ timing cover replacement, removal. I feel your pain!

Looks like right at a mold seam as well.

I have an OE tstat in the garage, gotta wait a couple days for the rad and 2 gallons of OAT coolant concentrate.

Do radiator shops replace the tanks on these? If it wasn't too expensive and was still in good shape, I would consider having it done.

I tried buying rebuilt radiators to replace the ones with Cracked tanks. Most of them failed. When I was a GM tech, I replaced many plastic tanks, with long term success. Perhaps you could get a new tank?

I wouldn't know where to start to get parts for these. Used to be, there were places that just recored and rebuilt radiators.

In the end, way easier to just replace instead of richarding around with it, but it's in my nature to take the long way around the lake.......lol.

Let your fingers do the walking ...
call a couple of the older radiator shops around

ask if it is possible to add tanks on your style radiator

also ask about approximate costs

The only radiator shop I could find who did actually rebuild the aluminum/plastic radiators was around 20 years ago. The savings was dramatic because aftermarket radiators were more expensive at that time, compared to nowadays.
A couple of years into it, this fellow's shop burned down. After his insurance paid and he rebuilt, he announced that he was back in business. After that, 2 out of every 3 radiators I'd replace with his "rebuilt" units would spring leaks at the joint gasket between the core and the tanks. In several instances, the plastic tanks would split, like the one shown in the photos for this thread. He admitted that the inventory he'd lost in the fire hurt him, and he was "just trying to get by".

After inquiring, the guy admitted that he was using "good" used tanks. Considering how plastic deteriorates with heat cycles/time, that's a bad idea. The problem was bad enough, and I had larger financial losses form the frequent warranty repairs I had to perform for customer satisfaction, due to the inconsistent dependability of these rebuilt radiators, I swore off of them and have never used anything but new ones since. You can get pretty good price on a new radiator by looking up Radiators.com. Peace! :)

Damn i'm glad i go by Rick, then my actual given name ;) :Big Laugh: :Big Laugh::Big Laugh:
No offense intended, Rick.

I just hope that the 240° didn't take out a head gasket on me.

It only took about 2 quarts to top it off initially.

I will crack the drain plug loose first to see if there's any coolant in the crankcase.

I got a rad from RockAuto, but cost $100 to ship, but was still a bit cheaper that local. Sucks that its only coming from the other side of the state, hopefully it will survive shipping.

Used to be places here that did that, didn't see any when I searched. Would be nice if the original is in good shape to have it fixed for a spare.

None taken Ed,i was just razzing ya,trying to help raise your spirits. This is the worst time of year to have to spend money on a daily driver.I hope the new rad gets you back on the road.I don't think 240 would hurt the head gaskets,so i got my fingers crossed the new rad is all you need.

The rad and coolant arrived this morning, so tomorrow I will be swapping them out. Was a giant box for the rad.

Denso was the brand, and the description said OE. Fingers crossed.

Still have an annoying cough from the NC funk we had. Gonna watch a vid or two on the changeout.

Denso is a premium product, the OE for Toyota and some Honda stuff. I have has stellar results from using their parts.
