LIQUI MOLY oil is decent oil if you know what you are looking at. They have a lot of oils that are tailored primarily to European specs. Do not let the panache of the brand being a German one and made in Germany you are getting something extra special.

I would not pay the price premium for it.

You would think liqui moly has moly?

Egineers at FCA made the srt oil with pennzopil to have over 250ppm moly. One reason why many of us preach on it, plus all of the white paper posted on it, see bobs and google. Valvoline 0w20 is getting some play on the board due to it's newer high moly levels.

Has Chrysler solved the hemi tick on it's new engines? Just curious as I am driving my old 97 with a 318 with only small minor problems over the years. With Stelantis and Fiat, the Ram has gotten progressively worse in the last 15 years. As long as people keep buying junk, they will keep making junk.
This is not a true statement. I’ve owned rams and worked them hard my entire adult life, every generation of ram I’ve owned has had slight upgrades to either wiring, interior quality and assembly, quality, transmission, and I’ve had the hemi every time. Never, ever have I had an issue and my trucks have always pushed over 100k miles. My 2004 which is what you’re referring to as the “peak” was dog ****. My new ram is ten times better in every category, safety, power, steering, quality of materials, fit and finish, reliability, interior, exterior. My 2020 I got in 2019 still feels new and I’m approaching 90k miles.

I read that Pennzoil varnishes your engine. Gets worse for HEMIs, because they run hot.
I have read the world is flat and the moon is made of cheese. You can find damn near anything on the net. Hell, just today I saw someone on this very forum tell an OP to touch the negative cable of his truck to the positve post of the battery to "Reset the Computer". The net is great but a lot or really stupid crap gets posted too.

Read the Blackstone oil reports and the member oil reviews. I trust the Balckstone results a lot more than random internet crap.

Time for a thread bump?

My '14 Hemi is right about at 105,500 miles. It is now and has been quiet since I bought it. The only noises were from the exhaust manifolds. All manifold bolts and both R and L manifolds have been replaced, and quiet ever since.

So this morning I had the dealer-installed mystery oil and cheap Mopar filter changed out to 5W-20 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with a Royal Purple 20-820 (large) filter.

Still nice and quiet. The only change I can even remotely attribute to the change is the oil pressure at idle and water temp = 200F.

Before, the oil pressure would sit at 31 psi to 33 psi. Now it is at 39-40 PSI. This is not scientific, it's anecdotal, and probably minor, but it's all I've noticed. The oil pressure still gets up to roughly 65 PSI at higher RPMs, so no change there.

Just for grins I sent a VOA of this oil to Blackstone for use as a point of reference. As I only drive about 6,000 miles per year I will likely do another oil change 3,000 miles from now and send off a used oil sample. I've only seen one previous sample and I didn't like the way it looked. I want to look for trends.

Right now I am undecided as to what oil I will use for the summer. I may continue with PUP 5W-20. I am thinking or trying Redline 5W-30. I plan on using another RP 20-820 filter again at next OCI.

Pennsylvania gets hot in summer. I'd go with 5W-30. Especially if you tow anything.

Yep, that's what I am thinking. Although 5W-20 is all I have ever used, My biggest concern is using one of the best oils we have seen. My best guess is that either oil, a really good 5W-20 or 5W-30 would work year round.

With a nice quiet Hemi I think I would feel better about 5W-30 now that it is over 100k miles. The PUP was much easier to find and get my hands on locally for this OCI. Redline will have to be ordered online.

EDIT: So far, I have never towed anything, and I've only loaded the bed with a face cord of wood once per year. Groceries and my fat a.s.s are the only "work" this truck regularly does. :D

This is an older post but im bringing it back. My 2013 Dodge Avenger 3.6 has used Pennzoil Platinum and a Mopar oil filter since the first oil change. When SRT switched from Mobil 1 to Pennzoil I also switched especially after my Chrysler training about the oil switch and me bringing up the question of Amsoil products. My 3.6 has seen 7500rpm many times and was a daily driver for 13 years using Pennzoil Platinum and when I changed the valve cover gaskets there was no sign of wear on anything when it came to the valve train. Of course the common failure of the 3.6 is the valve train just like a Hemi. I recently purchased a 2016 Hemi Ram and I switched all its fluids to Amsoil. If Pennzoil offered there Platinum fluids for more than just motor oils I would have switched to that. Pennzoil told me that there platinum motor oils are on comparison with Amsoil of course the Pennzoil is cheaper.
If you have a good maintained vehicle with no issues, I would switch to Pennzoil Platinum for better protection to make your engine last longer. I know from experience with my 140,000 miles 3.6 that I rev to 7500rpm with a modified tune that shows no engine wear.
My 3.6 is currently parked for the winter since I got my 4x4 Ram, but im soon going to turbo my 3.6 as the engine is healthy and the extra 100hp would be nice...lol

I would use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 on your Ram.

I currently use 5-30w Amsoil Signature series on my ram and at a hot idle (190F) im idling at 38psi of oil pressure. With based on old school oil pressure recommendations at 10psi per 1000rpm, idling at 650 rpm with 38psi is great. My son's 06 Ram idles at the same temps using Pennzoil Platinum with around 36psi. My Ram has 164,000miles and his Ram is less than that. If we used the local quick oil change shops like the average person would do chances are the oil pressure would be lower and there would be much less protection on the top end of the engine even though the lower end shows good pressure. My point is the Hemi and the 3.6 possibly would not have the issues they do if proper maintenance or a good oil was used. Many people use the cheap **** oil or filter and expect there engines too last, my former place of employment actually fired me because I refused to stock Chinese made oil filters and Recycled motor oil so they could charge a premium price for an oil change and make a profit. And if there were engine failures they directed the customer to their manufacturer warranty or aftermarket warranty for repairs. This way the dealer could say that they did a proper oil change with a filter and no liability would effect the dealership and then they would make a profit on the repairs if the customer came back.....

@BlakRose you make a good point. However I would differ from the fact that with my first truck, I followed the manual to the letter, used Mopar brand oil I bought from the dealership and still ended up with the dreaded tick.
Trouble is people often believe that if you follow the manual and obey the manufacturer's specifications, you'll be fine.
Knowledge is power. I wish there was someone to tell me about using the right oil and the oil change frequency in the same way I try to educate every Ram owner I meet now.

I cast my vote to Mobil Oil , this is what I would buy because my 6.1 says on the oil filler cap.
I also work at a John Deere dealer , so I get to buy the Deere 0W40 Synthetic oil which I have been happy with and easy to get for me. I use it in both of my Magnum 2005 RT 6.1 swapped , 2008 RT AWD and will be in my 2011 Ram 1500 6.4 BGE swapped.

Your 6.1 was when SRT used Mobil 1 for most of there vehicles and then Mobil changed there formula to save money and that's when there quality and protection went south and SRT switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is rated #2 compared to Amsoil. When I questioned Pennzoil engineers about Mobil 1 and Amsoil they directly stated they switched because Mobil 1 went cheap on there products to save money and the Rep stated that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is better. Of course I then contacted an Amsoil Tech and they straight up stated that Pennzoil is close to the quality of there product at a fraction of the cost but Amsoil is far more superior when it comes to protection.
As I mentioned before, if Pennzoil offered more than just engine oil in there product line, I would be using there products but Amsoil has more of an expanded product line and Amsoil has been tested and proven to be a far more superior product on the market.
I'm currently using Amsoil in everything on my used 2016 Ram that has 160,000+ and for 6 months now driving my truck like I stole it its been working perfectly. Even the rear posi works great using Amsoil as I've tested it many times now doing burnouts....lol

When FIAT took over in 2009, it changed to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum because they are under the SOPUS umbrella that FIAT was aligned with. That is the only reason it changed. Nothing to do with quality, it was all a business decision based on alliances.
