Hopefully so. Winters here where I live are not that harsh but the VOA/UOA data I've seen on the HPL SC 0w-30 looks really awesome. I don't recall seeing anything on the HPL 5w-30 and it's probably just as impressive.

We can get temps very close to 0F and a couple degrees below, but not frequently.

This is mostly what our weather can be like here...

Why that photo look like what can happen the first 10 days of May in north IA and MPS area of MN...

New Lake Speed Jr. Video may be of some interest - differences between U.S. and European Motor Oil Specifications.

What's the deal? Well, in the confusing new world of bizarre engine architectures, it matters. A lot. EPA has gone nuts in forcing engine makers to squeeze tenths of percentage fuel economy increases driving bizarre engine features and API attempts to respond to them.

In many cases, we have found European Motor Oil Specs are better for U.S. engines than API engine specs. Examples: lates U.S. API SP requires more miniscule fuel economy changes, the biggest being much lower oil viscosity WITHIN SAE viscosity grades. SAE 30 weight oils have gone from upper 11 cST @ 100 C to lower 10 cSt @ 100 C, almost a 20 wt! That effects engine wear rates. How much you'd have to track with UOA.

Euro Oils to ACEA specs did not cut their viscosity, in general. And they left a bunch of antiwear (SAPS) additives in. The only thing I've seen changed is they have also swapped more expensive Magnesium for Calcium detergents to reduce LSPI. Even Ram has a high compression turbo GDI engine now - the "Hurricane", and many of us own mouse mobiles with turbo GDI engines.

This is why I recently changed after years of using PUP 5W-30 (now basically a 5W-20) to Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 (a European Spec'd Motor Oil). Trying to save our engines from EPA is a full time job these days.

So the action in motor oils these days is not the 20 year old Hemi valvetrain tick and destruction anymore. This is well known and mitigated (use Red Line or HPL Motor Oil). Current engine architecture is small displacement, turbocharged, and GDI.

Lake babbles too much history of fuels and engines for the 1st 21 minutes. Fast forward is you want to avoid all the unnecessary preamble.

BTW - too much babbling about the specs and tests themselves without linking them to what we need for our engines.

All I got out of and hour and 21 minutes of rambling is anti-wear isn't compatible with exhaust aftertreatment, especially particulate filters.

I've bought from them before too. Never had any problems.

After inventoring my supply I purchased 6 more quarts of redline 5w30 for the $81 on the jungle site. That'll put me at 15 quarts 5w30 and 3 lonely quarts of 0w30. enough for 2 years at the rate I've been putting or keeping miles off the truck. I've put on a little over 2k since last change in April. I ran 5w30 all last winter and plan on doing it this winter too. It's obviously not my dd. My work car gets all the miles 25k-40k or so depending on jobsite locations. I only drive the truck on the weekends when and if I'm home so in the winter if I know I'm going to go somewhere and it's below 20 degrees I'll go plug it in a couple hours before since it's parked in our unheated pole shed.

Isn't RA Hoerr a distributor for RL? If so that looks like a legit source for some good priced RL
I just know that is Amazon redline store, I have been buying there ever since 2020 when eBay sales dried up. Now sales are few and far between, seams like the world changed for affordability that year and is gone now.

Dumbarse award of the day goes to me and reason #24645.45 why I hate newer crap with electronics. We got our first snowfall Saturday into this morning (6 inches roughly). Bought a 22 kawasaki teryx side by side almost 2 years ago as a plow machine to replace our old polaris sportsman that had trouble with wet heavy snow. Wife has never driven the teryx but since I'm gone every week for work she needs to learn how to plow our 150' driveway while I'm gone.

I go to show her this morning. I'm driving while she's riding shotgun. I didn't have the seat belt on. Do the walk through with her show her the controls for the winch etc etc. Go to start plowing showing her how I do it and anything over 5mph the thing is bucking like a bronco and won't go any faster. She's scared poop less since she's already afraid of it. She's not an outdoors person. Hates cold hates snow etc. Weird thing is is it's just fine in reverse. Got it up to 10mph.

This is the 3rd time driving it since I put a new oem belt on 3 months ago. Both drives before it performed flawlessly. I add redline s1 to every tank of gas 1oz per gallon and since I knew it was going to sit for awhile I added a little seafoam for stabilization. First thoughts are fuel filter is clogged which is somewhat a common problem on these from what I've read, bad spark plugs, or I didn't get all the old broken belt chunks or didn't clean the clutches well enough. I had to replace the belt at the campground so I didn't have the convenience of my pole shed with all my tools and a cleaner work space.

After a few minutes of plowing and it "acting up" she goes back inside and I finish plowing while keeping it under 5mph. Finally the last few passes I was making I got sick of the seat belt light lit up and blinking at me on the dash. I said to myself. Self that can't be it can it? Plugged the seat belt in behind me like I did the previous winter when I'd plow because I hate having any lights lit up on the dash. Sure as **** that was it. Who would have thunk even on a simple machine the darn thing won't go over 5mph if the seat belt isn't connected.

Sorry for the book.

What is the difference between the ESP and the Advanced Fuel Economy versions of Mobil 1 0W30?

I may switch our Pentastars over to a 0W30 when I run out of my PUP 5W30 stash.

I don't know. Mobil has change so much product in the past 10 years I couldn't possible keep up, nor would I want to anymore. I will say that it appears that Exxon has finally unleashed the chains they put on Mobil when they re-acquired them in 1999. Back then I heard from former colleagues how Exxon slashed and burned Mobil's excellent lubricants R&D Division. Exxon only wanted their gas outlets.

Someone must have convinced them that the profitable lubricants division was worth rebuilding.

Anyway, I haven't run Mobil in engines since 2014. @Travis8352 seems to keep track of them.

Amidst continuing corporate consolidations and government over-regulations, I've made another change.

With the continuing instability at Red Line since Conoco-Phillips bought and moved them, I'm discontinuing use of Red Line 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil and replacing with Amsoil V-Twin 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil.

Red Line Pricing is out of control. Yeah, there's an occasional sale, but high pricing and scarce availability is putting them out of reach for many, including me. I'm not paying $20.50 a quart for motorcycle oil, even if I only change once a year. It's ridiculous.

Amsoil is $12.29 a quart (w/o shipping, free over $100 purchase). Supposed to be all Group IV PAO base except for ester required to hold additives in solution. Yes, higher ester oils like Red Line have higher oxidation stability at high temperature, but PAO should be plenty good enough. And PAO + detergent cleans better than esters + detergent, though esters don't contribute to deposit creation.

by the way, the latest Harley engine, the M8, is either oil-cooled heads or water cooled now days. My oil-cooled head engine only gets to 200 degrees F in the oil sump even on hot days. So, even though my M8 is still technically "air-cooled", it has extra cooling. I also added cylinder fans.

Screw Red Line. I'm done.

Redline si-1 irreplaceable...

Hemi tick, still best known option.

RFE loves c+.

The rest of it, go elsewhere? For me personally, loading up when it's on sale isn't that hard. If it ain't broke don't fix it and my hemi whispers.

My point is it is broke. Unless you stock for 5 years, but I don't wanna go that far out, not to mention the huge money outlay for this, so trying to find a sale at any given time becomes a serious issue when this has been severely reduced.

Trans don't get charged often, nor gearboxes, so what matters is the engine oil pricing and availability.

I ordered HPL SC 0w-30 this past weekend, and I'm wondering if anyone has posted a VOA on it? I don't want to pay for it again if we've already seen it.
I thought I recall seeing a UOA and folks saying they liked the way it looked. I have enough coming that I can use it for my next 2 OCIs so we can get UOAs on both but it'll be a while.

My last OCI was May 2025 and I'm still under 4000 miles. I'm averaging 9-10 months between changes now that I'm retired and next one should be this January.
