PUP is what we thought it was (apologies to the late, wacky coach Dennis Green):
Here is Lake Speed again from a year ago with differences between Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum.
Takeaways -
- Both are same visosity in 5W-30, but are a very light 30 weight (only 10 cSt @ 100C)
- PP is Dexos licensed, PUP is not
- PUP has MORE antioxidant, detergent, and antiwear than PP
- PUP is BETTER than PP, despite not being Dexos licensed, in terms of not degrading as fast (oxidation), cleaning engines (detergency), and wear prevention - just as advertised and as we thought in the last decade.
- PUP can be used in Hemi, but needs more moly than stock (has only 97 ppm Moly), which is why guys add LubeGard Moly supplment
- PUP is marginal for heavy towing due to the light 30 weight viscosity. I stick with Red Line 5W-30 for Hemi.
- PUP looks like a great oil for small 4 cylinder engines with single injector GDI and turbos.
- PUP is BETTER than a basic Dexos oil.
Is Shell planning to Dexos license? Who knows? Maybe they just push PP because most buyers are price sensitive, so no point licensing their super oil?
Bottom line - PUP is preferred to PP (per me). Other Dexos oils might be as good, or not, unless somebody does a VOA.

What Makes This Oil So Special?
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is chemically different from Pennzoil Platinum. So what makes it so special? Going beyond the elemental analysis, Certified Lubricati...
