Treb, head on over to the oil filter thread. I'm into Fram Endurance these days, Royal Purple still has a following but they've ****** us around a lot on availability and pricing.

Fram Ultra was downgraded. Purolator Boss seems to me little different than Wix XP - a synthetic rock catcher?

I am going back to my stock of RP 20-820 and may pick up a couple Fram Ultra Guard after referring to this graph...

Slant 6 was bulletproof precisely because it was a dog.

Landau - now there's a feature i haven't heard for decades! Along with "rich, corinthian leather." lol
Dog indeed with its what, 95hp, but it could run on moonshine and six different spark plugs.
Stevie Wonder could tweak the carb and cap on it. Thing was so easy to work on.

The interior had the familiar corinthian smell about it, too ;)
That, and the 70's odor of my Momma smashing darts like a fiend back then.

After this car she purchased her very first brand new car, a 1980 Datsun 210 station wagon in silver with the grey twill fabric adorned with black plastic piping over all the seams.
A true classic and chariot if I've ever been in one ;)

I have a very specific memory in that vehicle from my childhood as well.
It involves my being flung into the car by my Momma as she was in an epic full blown mother protection rage event, hunting a neighborhood bully down in it.

Look at that test date.

That was three years ago, these oil filters have since changed in filtering efficiency.

I thought I recalled recently seeing a YT video showing the PB performing well, but I don't recall what it was being compared to, and I didn't save it.
It's hard to find a test setup that features only the filters we are interested in,
and is recent.

And how do we know when a filter is changed? Or an oil?

Yeah, the efficiency was poor on the original Ascent independent test, not sure why the YT guy got a different, better result. So from my view, Purolator Boss is a rock catcher, without more recent data or explanation.

How do we know? Largely through forums like this one, cause manufacturers don't say much anymore. They're all about marketing and flack leading the way with no facts.

So we get industry insiders sometimes, independent testers sometimes, etc. For instance, there was a big hullabaloo when Fram cheapened Ultra and launched Titanium and Endurance. Took us a while to figure out what they were up to and why.

You will remember when all the pickups had their gas tanks squeezed inbetween the cab and bed. They thought that was the safest location. ha hahahahah

Alright, I've read a bunch of pages, but I'm not certain which oil and filter to get. Here's my situation.

I've run RL 5w30 and RP 20-820's in the past, but recently ran a couple changes with a 0w40 Valvoline that supposedly met spec. Then I thought I was starting to hear some lifter tick in my truck, so I put a bit of LubeGard Biotech in it. No real change after a few hundred miles. I can hear some faint noise, so I want to be sure that the wrong oil isn't contributing to a problem..

I'm due for a change on my wife's WK2 Grand Cherokee with a 5.7 and 108k, and will be on my 2015 2500 6.4 with 120k. It would be great to just buy oil and filters in bulk to have on the shelf for both rigs.

I'm seeing Pennzoil Ultra Performance being recommended, but I'm not very familiar with it. Do you need to run Lubegard with it?

Or is Redline worth the extra $$?

I'd rather spend money on oil than hard parts.

Thanks in advance fellas.

@Mike Duckmanton Pennzoil Ultra Performance is basically the recommended and I think factory oil that is used on the 6.4 Hemis in the factory. It even has an SRT logo on it. However if someone is running any oil other than Redline, I would recommend using it for only 3000 - 4000 miles.
The factory recommendation on the 5.7 is 5w20. I would say ditch that and only use 5w30 to save your engine.
The 5.7 V8 responds well to using a good 5W30 oil and running it for short intervals. That is what I am doing now. Don't listen to people saying that youMy 5.7 Hemi responded very well to Mobil 1 FS 0w40 as well and I used that oil for only 3000 miles each time, but I suspect I could have pushed it further than that. I cannot say that every 0w40 will work for the 5.7, but I suppose it should be OK since it is the factory for the 6.4 Hemi. For now I'm sticking with 5w30 and 5w40 oils.

As for the 6.4, I can't make any recommendations, other than the fact that people have been running Redline 5w30 in the 6.4s with great success. Will any 5w30 work the same way.. I really can't say. Maybe it will, but only for short intervals.

You said that you were using Valvoline 0w40. I would suggest to keep using that and keep the OCIs to a short period like 3k miles. You can use the same 0w40 on both vehicles.
Otherwise if you're looking for a guarantee, then there is only one recommendation. Run Redline 5w30 in both vehicles.

You were using Red Line 5w/30 and an Royal Purple 20-820 oil filter before you started using Valvoline 0w/40 and adding Lubegard Biotech without issues?

Simple Imo, go back to using Red Line 5w/30 and see if it resolves the "faint noise" and stay with the oil/oil filter/oci strategy that was performing well.

What have you got to loose?

So I realized when I tested Valvoline R&R on the Rogue that I was using a Wix XP filter rather than the Amsoil EA15k13 I normally do with SS 0w20. The QR2.5 calls for a 15k12 but the 13 is slightly bigger, same idea as the larger filter for our trucks.

Decided to waste another $29 and try R&R one more time, this time with an Amsoil EA15k13. So far 120 miles in, I have not heard a startup rattle like i did before. If it's just the filter that was causing the startup rattle, I'll just use the Amsoil filter with R&R. That will drop the cost of oils changes for the Rogue by $40 or so.

Then I can put the $40 towards better oil for the truck :head3:

Just a minor detail, but in case you find yourself in a store looking for PUP,
you are looking for Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (not Performance) ;)

Further empirical evidence that filter media does impact oil flow rate despite the theoretical analysis that constant volume flow oil pumps provide the same oil flow throughout the engine regardless of filter media restriction.
I don't know why, it bugs me.

Them Japanese don't need to trip hazards into their engines, they already have shaken Law. Funny how when the gov't gets a huge share of a cars operating cost overtime how well they build stuff? The fake reasons we hear of ad nauseum, all lies, truth is automobiles are a huge source of this gov't resources, they don't want them lasting as long as owners do.

The largest enemy of my rav 4's longevity? The idiot driving it, despite the thing running flawlessly and easy to maintain tune ups and fluid changes, the brainless twit who calls herself my wife wants a 60k Lexus. Not that I have strong feelings about it or anything.
