5.7 with 8 speed swap
hey guys, new here and just wondering if anyone has done or has info on how to make a 44-45 (8 speed)
t case work in the older ram , mines a 2009 4x4 i currently have swapped the 8 speed into my rig and works great! . but now i an running into the problem of not having 4x4. i have done some digging and found that there is no way i could use the 44-44 tcase that came with this trans , just wondering if anyone knows if the 44-45 would work ? or have a wiring diagram so i can make something work . haha

It will work, folks swap these cases. Need to update the BCM with alpha obd. The 44-45 actually uses a shift fork to engage 4hi, the 44-44 has clutches so nothing mechanically “shifts”, at least not until you select 4low.

haven’t checked out the alpha thread lately, need to double check to see if ‘09 is supported.

These are found in the “4th Gen DIY” section.

It's a very easy swap. You need a 2 4locl and 4lo switch and the t case. Swap it out Alfa program it to Thi k its the 45 and done. I have to ask why are you wanting to do this.

I swapped the old 545rfe out and put in the 8 speed out of a 2015 , but the 44-44 will not work with the 09 bcm , my old 5 speed is a 243 so wiring and what not are different, but I was reading that the 44-45 is a better swap and will work easier with the old wiring.

The tranny itself is a straight bolt-in into your truck Lyle with the crossmember/driveshaft etc. from a later 8 speed truck,it's getting it to comminicate with your truck. Talk to Russell at Sound German for the electrical end of things.Or find a wrecked 8 speed truck and swap everything from it into your truck.

Just peaking down the rabbit hole is all I’m Doing “right now” @Brandon-w lol
Sounds pretty easy to do. I’d go to the auto wreckers and buy an 8 speed if I went this route. Will see how long my newly rebuilt 545 lasts. You know, to save the money first as who knows how deep this rabbit hole goes! Thanks @Wild one for the info.

Super simple ,I got all my **** from a wrecked 2015 but I grabbed the top and bottom rad hose as well and bought a larger after market trans cooler Russell from sound German Automotive helped with the computer to run the trans he was super helpful and quick to ship everything I needed . I did have to make up new lines for the coolant to run to the trans and oil line for the trans oil cooler but honestly took me a day for the swap other then waiting for the computer and harness from Russell down in the states ( im in Canada)

Also found the 2015 starter needed to be used due to the teeth on the 8 speed flex plate being slightly different but it bolted up the same as my old 09 starter.

@Lyle Longboat I still have a complete spare 545 if you want it haha
No thank you, I just rebuilt mine and changing a few more parts I already have when my cam goes in to assist the 545. I’m going to look into this as I believe there is a 2015 sitting out by a local home that has been collecting garbage lol. Surprising out here in the middle of no where! I could probably get this trans really cheap if their truck isn’t running, especially up here.

You can delete the coolant heater pretty easily.Neither the cars or the HD trucks with the 8 speed heat the transmission fluid, only the 1500's heat the tranny fluid, and they only heat the fluid for epa/cafe numbers.

I know , I just didn't feel like spending the money on the bypass block plus I had all the tubing already from other projects .

You don't need the bypass kit ,you can accomplish the same thing with (2) 5/16 NC set screws,or even bolts.Take a read through the thread i linked to Matt, you'll see how it can be done for next to nothing money wise. It'd be cheaper to delete it,then what it cost you in extra coolant to fill the rad to keep the heat exchanger, lol

This sounds promising for me, especially since you have an '09! I imagine the pre 13's are a little more involved as far as integrating goes?

Do you mind me asking how much this set you back roughly? I'm in Canada as well. You can PM if you'd rather. Thanks!
