anyone see this new episode towing about 28,*** lbs? the ram actually beat the ford in time and MPG. i mean it was basically a wash but if i remember correctly, didnt they always test the F-450 against the 3500? the trucks were basically apples to apples, with 410 ratios. anyways, just was happy to see a much older truck keep up with something that has 60 more HP.

Yeah, the times were less than 5 seconds apart and basically a wash. It was 11:41 for the Ram and 11:43 for the Ford with both being around 45 mph most of the way. Not bad towing over 28k lbs even though I will never come close to towing that. Taller trans gearing played a big roll in keeping the Ram in its sweet spot.

Also, you have to remember that GM, Ford, and Cummins all use different SAE standards for their power ratings. Cummins uses J1995 while Ford and GM both use different standards from each other. If they all used the same standard, then they might be a little closer in power ratings.

yea i have to agree the gears saved the Ram. I actually love the Ford and almost bought a 6.2 gasser with 4.30s this time around, but i love the Ram and have had no bad experiences with a single truck of the 3 ive owned in 6 years. either way, a newer lighter HD and more power with the refresh should help the Ram here soon!

As of 2015 all 3 manufacturers should be using J2807 standard.

Edit: I see now that the j1995 standard you're talking about is for engine power. J2807 is a standard for towing and Ford is rated higher than the ram slightly. Odd that its towing slower, even if it is ever so slightly, looking at how much more power the 6.7 PS makes.

My points exactly. the Ford on paper has a clear advantage over the Cummins yet it held its own. very impressive.

I could have sworn that I seen a video earlier this year where they lined up 1 ton diesels of the big 3 with a set amount of weight and the results were 1. Ford 2. Chevy & Ram coming in last. It wasn't too long ago that Chevy was first in pulling followed very closely by Ram, & Ford was dead last.

I found it very interesting that the Ford was much quicker in a drag race with no load but yet it was slower (or negligably a tie) hauling 28000lbs up the ike.

I would pick the ram because I believe the inline 6 would be easier and cheaper to maintain than the powerstroke v8.

I am not too concerned about stock power numbers when I purchased my truck because I knew I was going to tune it shortly after getting it anyways. The reason why the other two can make the power that they can is because their CP4/Denso pumps pumps at higher pressures and their piezzo injectors have more precise injection events. This allows them achieve higher horsepower numbers while remaining emissions complaint. The 6.7L Cummins can easily make the same power, but it can't do it AND meet emissions unless they go with a higher pressure pump and an injector with more injection events.

However, I would rather have the more reliable CP3 pump and electronic solenoid injectors of the Cummins and just tune it aftermarket. Not only that, but I don't have remove a mountain of plastic hoses and parts if i need to work on it and I don't have to worry about glow plugs. Each one has their pluses and minuses.

About time they did an apples to apples comparison, always hated the 450 with different gearing vs 3500 tests.

I like this comment, but to add to it, you need to keep in mind shift speed, shift aggression, and computer controlled RPM climb all takes into consideration when drag racing empty HD trucks.

The Ram might have spooled slower, shifted slower and more smoothly, which inevitably caused it to lose a drag race.

Just food for thought.
