I’ve read all kinds of threads about the “Hemi tick” and lifter failures but I’m not sure if mine has it or not.

So the symptoms started after a cold night. I noticed the truck was ticking when cold or hot. Did some research and found the lifter issue so I parked it. I had some recall work that needed to be done at the dealership, so I drove it to the dealership. It ticked when I cranked it and I ended up getting on the accelerator to pass someone and when I got to the dealership noticed it stopped.

It sat there for two days and they updated the PCM as well as some other things. After picking up the truck I noticed a slapping noise along with the tick.

I tore the truck down to valves, found a broken exhaust manifold bolt and replaced. I noticed no play in the push rods up or down. There was a little play side to side (not sure if that’s normal).

Replaced the bolt. Ticking is gone, slapping rattling sound is still there.

Anyone got any other ideas? I’m at a loss at this point. I did hook a scanner to it and my STFT is staying at 99% which I know is too high. Also getting a P0420 code.

After the manifold bolt was fixed, when does this happen? at warm idle? If so can you upload an audio file and if so record it from the bottom end of engine?

It happens at cold and warm idle. I’ll get a recording for you.

The early 6.4's had wristpin issues, not saying that's you're issue, just saying they were known to have slightly under sized wristpins.

Well it’s looking like engine failure. Drained the oil and it had this beautiful shine to it. Don’t know if the lifter wiped the cam (even though I didn’t get a misfire) or what.

My son has a 2015 Scat Pack Challenger. It had the tick, he took it to our not-so-local dealership. After inspection and discussion, they replaced the long block. It had the lifter/rocker failure. Took two months to get the new engine in, but they did it all under warranty.

165,000 and I used Amsoil 0w-40. Maybe it was time with this engine I’m not sure. My 2005 Sierra with a 5.3 went over 200,000 with no engine problems.

I think I’m going to rebuild. Anyone got a list of aftermarket parts? Damn sure don’t want to do anything Mopar since they can’t even install the correct parts on their own engines.

No shavings? Rebuild what? The entire engine? You don't even know what the issue is right? You gonna do top and bottom end? Did you toss that old oil or still have it? Could get it analyzed see if it was bearings or something else maybe? Maybe as you tear it down the damage will reveal itself, but I'm not sold it is necessary just yet. If you have the ability might be a fun project and good for long term, but I'd wait til I knew more if it were me.

Where do I find shavings? The oil control valve? I’ve always have been told if your oil looks like glitter in the sun it ain’t good. I know that was old school is this any different?

0w40 amsoil in a 5.7? And you got tick at 165? My 04 with a 5.3 went 250k and it runs quieter than my hemi but a coworker just had his 5.3 cam and lifters done at 86k 2010 sierra. And it still sounds like trash
