25k miles on the truck.

said it from the get-go...Transmission tuning is crap, shift logic is crap, lugging is crap, downshifts are crap.

Trans is out for the count.

Had it flushed around 20k miles. At 25k miles now.

The other day it had a hard downshift, almost felt like i got rear ended...
Then the next morning, truck had a harder downshift...this time i had that pit in stomach feeling of being hit, it was so harsh.

The next couple of days, it drove fine, trans temps never above 180 and everything was ok except some hard shifts here and there but not as bad as had happened the prior days.

Then woke up one morning and it sounded like trash, and almost sounded like something was being tossed around the trans pan, but only when in drive and foot on brake. Not in park or neutral.
Then drove it to dodge, had the tech test drive it for 30 minutes.
each and every shift got worse, and upon arriving back at the service isle...temp was 230 DEGREES.What?

I will update everyone shortly. This is trash. I was literally looking at the ATS bypass block a few weeks back. If this is what caused the failure, i wonder if the trans flush set it off? That would be against most logic but you never know.

As a rule I never "flush" a transmission. Not sure what you meant by it, but Im a firm believer of basically just draining and refilling using gravity or whatever power is provided by any pump built into the transmission.

Then again, even just a drain and refill could technically disturb some gunk or dirt or something and it could still land in just the wrong location and cause issues.

Its a 2018? Isnt it under warranty? Let the dealer deal with it.

flush as in what you stated, simple oil replacement.

under warranty, and dealer will take care of it.
but i dont know if that means new factory unit or an onsite rebuilt unit, which will inevitabley fail again

Just based on the fact that dealers and techs and FCA want to invest as little time and money as possible, my guess is a rebuilt unit would be installed once they finally agree there is something wrong with the current unit (which there seems to be....hopefully they took the 230 degree temp as evidence)

Kinda sounds like a bad torque converter, I suppose they could try changing just that but for that amount of work they might as well just swap the whole thing.

Why did it need serviced at 20K in the first place? Was it having issues or did you want to change out the pan or something?

I’m having good luck with mine so far[emoji1695]

i have done alot of proactive maintenance on the truck. south Florida sees alot of rain...and alot of floodwater.
just because im **** and wanted fresh fluid after a 20k mile break in. I experienced shearing of the dif oil, so i thought all the factory oil should be replaced.

Mine was at the dealer for 3 months (6/17-9/10) with a failed tranny. Got it back a couple weeks ago. Took it back in on Monday 10/1. I haven't heard what is wrong this time. First time my service writer said FCA would replace it. Every time he had seen one as bad as mine, FCA replaces.... except this time. They rebuilt it or whatever the heck they did. No love, same thing. They replaced some more parts. Worked for a few days before new issues started showing up. Not a happy camper.

Ugh. Keep us updated.

I cant agree with you more about your feelings for this trans. I have hated it since day one with my truck. Im under 30k miles and I still hate it.

Had my tranny replaced at under 5k. Talk about a bummer three weeks in the shop....truck was less than 5 months old. Not sure the quality of build on these trannys. Next time I'm going to considering going to a transmission shop to see what options are available for aftermarket parts

Might be a stupid question, but which tranny is in the '18 6.4? I have way too many things to keep track of to remember which model is in what year.

As a rule I never "flush" a transmission.

As a rule, I always get mine flushed. Especially since the machines can reverse flush now.

We plow and tow, I want the fluid and tranny and cooler flushed. Filter replaced.

After dealing with the Honda early 2000s transmission debacle 3 times, I would rather drain and refill what I can than wait 30K+ miles and do it all at once. Unfortunately the 8HP makes this tough, but my wifes Lexus is pretty simple, I can drain and refill at every oil change and essentially have fresh fluid after 3 oil changes.

Filter is a different story but Ill replace that at the mileage that Lexus recommends doing the first trans fluid change.

We have the 66RFE it's almost exactly like the diesel version the 68RFE inside. Then the 2019s got the 8 speed ZF which is also what they use in the hellcat and I won't lie its awesome. Ask me how I know lol.

i raged on my hellcat daily and the trans held on like it was strapped with a titanium 5 point harness.

ZFs are typically in a different league.

Just had the valve body replaced on my zf and the shifts feel smoother, the whine I was hearing seems gone as well as the bump when coming to a stop. Took a month to get it done and only had it back a few.days, but so far the improvement is noticeable.

i only have 8k mi but i couldnt ask for a better trans so far

at 20k there should be no reason to drop the trans fluid.

now i think of it. op sounds like the same guy that said he thrashes his truck. possibly the powerwagon site. not sure if that was his exact words but something similar
