Hey Guys/Gals,

I was pulled over this morning by a State Trooper down in lovely Oregon State. I got a warning, but he told me that I needed to get new tires for my truck. From the looks of it, I have about 1/4" or so left of tread, maybe a bit more. I don't know tires, so I don't know how to gauge it.

I started looking at tires this morning, and talked to a few friends/colleagues. Several of them pointed out that winters down here can be brutal. While family reminded me that I haul trailers nearly every weekend.

I'm at a bit of an impasse here, I need to find tires that are All Seasons or at least decent traction in the snow, will work for hauling, and last awhile. I do a significant amount of driving. I've owned my truck since Dec 2017, and I've put a little over 25k miles on it.

I looked at these tires as a winner but I'd be more comfortable getting feedback from others before I bite the $1200 bullet for these. If you have a cheaper option but provides the same outcome, I'm all ears.

1/4” of tread is a decent of tire life left (depening on the style of tire) where I am from . But you say harsh winters, you may be more inclined to replace them. The old rule of thumb is 3/32” is when to replace them, you can check them with a penny like pictured below. If you have tread above lincolns head your ok, if you can see lincolns full head they need replaced. Truth be told, I always have replaced tires well before this but, its just the old school rule of thumb.

Me personally, I am running BF Goodrich KO2s and I love them, but I am in Indiana. You being where you are, I bet alot of people may tell you to buy dedicated winter tires. I also like D or E load range tires and if you tow they are worth the upgrade over the P tires that come on these trucks.

You are going to find everyones opinion on tires to be different.

Just curious but are you using the truck for commercial or business use? If so then that’s why he is saying you need new tires.

No, non-commercial use.

I'll check some other places out, not sure Les Schwab carries those brands.

Discount Ties carries Michelin maybe Nitto as well but Schwab carries good tires too.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have the WORST luck with the dumbest things. I've been pulled over for a DUI before, Officer said I was bouncing in my lane too much and looked drunk. It was 8AM Sunday morning, and I'm dressed for Church. My brother on the other hand, can drive wasted every weekend for 2 years, and not get nailed for a DUI. The only reason he got a DUI was because he slid on rocks and slammed into a telephone pole.

I’d recommend these Michelin LTX 2’s. I e never used them before but I’ve considered them numerous times. Matter of fact, when these bfg at’s wear out, these are probably what’s gonna replace them. They have a 60k mile warranty, they come in a ten ply and they’re pretty far up on the pole according to tire rack for ride comfort, mileage, dry traction, noise, wet traction, ice, deep and light snow.

Cooper Discoverer A/T3s can usually be had for a lot less than that Les Schwab quote. Les Schwab is a great store, but you definitely pay a premium.

I hate saying it, but I'm probably going to roll with the Les Schwab tires. I don't have a spare $1,000 and I have a credit line with them. My overtime at work just got smacked down to 5 hours a week, instead of the 20 - 30 I was doing. I may get a slightly cheaper tire, or get 2 tires to start off with, and then get 2 more later on. I don't like that idea but you do what you gotta do to get stuff done.

FWIW I went for the Toyo Open Coutry AT II in a P-Metric size. I occasionally pull a 2 horse trailer and spent a great deal of the summer on back roads up in the Cascades. So far I love these tires. I got em at Les Schwab as well

I just bought Cooper Discoverer A/T3's, awesome tire for 214.00 Canadian each. Quiet, smooth ride and just enough lug to make them a 12 month usable tire.

Discount Tires has them , plus they offer 0% up to 12 months
