So I got a 2010 1500 with the 5.7 ive noticed that it seems to require oil changes faster than it should. For instance since december ive driven maybe 7-10 thousand miles and have had 3 oil changes already and my truck is telling me it needs another oil change. Have any of you ran into this issue? Does the sensor go strictly off like time and not actually check the oil life? Any info helps

How miles do you have on the odometer? And what type of miles are they? (towing heavy work use etc. )

It doesn't monitor like the newer 4th Gens and is just based on mileage (mine comes on every 5000 KMs).

There's an algorithm for the oil changes, do you do a lot of short trips? I've pit just over 10K on my '09 since I got it, and just didn the 2nd oil change last month.

If I took the oil life down to 0% with my pentastar powered 2017, it would be about 10000mi between OCs. I just can't bring myself to go that long.

I agree. Besides, unless you are using a filter designed for synthetic use (K&N, Fram Ultra, Mobile1, Royal Purple etc) then the filter is going into bypass around 4-5k any ways and not doing much for your oil.

I have 9500 miles on my 2017 3.6. I did my first oil change at 4800 miles, showed 52% on the oil life. Now it's showing 53%. 10k miles exactly on oil change recommendations for me.

According to Cummins I should change my oil every 7500 miles... I just ignore the idiot EVIC display and dash lights and just watch my odo... When it comes up to the next 7500 mile interval, I change the oil...

I am probably going to take the dash apart and disable that ridiculous CEL... Or paint over it with a sharpie...

on my 2011, when the tech resets the oil change light. it starts the 3500miles before it comes on again.
it isnt based on the oil life. but mileage.

I still use the odometer and sticker for the next oil change method. I do reset it every change and it rarely comes on before I do it again unless I didn't reset it properly. On the older trucks it doesn't have a %meter to let you know it's just change it within 500k of the light coming on.

Just got my first change today. 11000 km in. The oil life monitor still said about 30% but I just couldn’t hold off anymore. I figure about 6 months of service it was a good time.

Just got a 2009 Ram and the dealership told me they changed the oil. Then about a week later the change oil message came on. The oil change sticker says I have about 3k miles until I needed one. Does this message come on automatic or does it go off due to oil life??

Hah! When I was a kid, my buddy had an old beater with a heater Audi. The "Check Engine" light came on and was so bright it lit up interior at night so he put a happy face sticker over the light and drove it for another 3 years without a problem one.

The "Oil Life" is a calculated percentage based on vehicle usage (run time, idle time, temperature, rpms, etc). There is nothing in the engine that "tests" the oil.
I'm guessing the dealer just forgot to reset the oil life monitor.

They probably forgot to reset it when they changed the oil. Just go by the sticker and reset it now so it doesn't keep warning youand again when you do the next change. Reset procedure is turn on the ignition, but do not start the truck. Gas pedal to the floor 3 times, then start the truck.

I Also DO NOT follow the EVIC. I use 100% Synthetic , in town and some short highway ! I keep a eye on the sticker and change around 5k and the EVIC is around 40%/50%

It doesn't monitor like the newer 4th Gens and is just based on mileage (mine comes on every 5000 KMs).

Even the 4th gen's do it off my mileage, at least mine does. My 17 3.6 always tells me to do it at 10k miles (though I do it around 6k with synthetic).
